you would figure that considering their size and training that they would be able to fight. |

Naaaahhh... How much physical hand to hand combat do you get trained on? From everything I have heard its minimal.
To quote Gen Kill: "Don't fool yourself. We're not being warriors out here. They're just using us as machine operators, semi-skilled labor." |
Exactly, if your in the Army! Unless you take your training further while you're filling your billet at your duty station. Marines have MCMAP Not sure if the Army has anything like this.

One of the reasons Marine basic is longer is because of the martial arts. It's more in depth, I still remember the training and basic techniques like it was yesterday, and could still put them to use in a scruff. Haha I was 20 days along in bootcamp, 6 years ago! As far as I know the Army only teaches a little hand to hand combat in basic training but they don't go as in depth as the Marines.
A basically trained Marine has a better chance of kicking someones ass than a basically trained soldier. Providing both have no prior martial arts background. |

Besides - wasn't Generation Kill about a Marine Recon unit - some of the most highly trained Marines (please, correct me if I'm wrong, CC), there are? That comment wouldn't even be relevant to the topic. |

I've met a Marine Recon platoon and was scared for my life. The way they're portrayed in the show is really pathetic. They act like "normal" Marines. I had forgot they were recon, just a regular grunt unit.
I really don't know how they train or what they do, all they say is they swim and get drowned a lot, lol.
There's one word to describe them hardingcore. |

I think that was the point of the show, is that they were pissed off the whole time that they were not being utilized properly. :p They were being treated like normal Marines. |

1) the soldiers were drunk.
2) they have PTSD.
3) midgets have compacted muscle mass.

Only Army Rangers (Not Reservists, Regular or National Guard) get training in Martial Arts (From what I understand), my buddy was one, and got extensive training in Judo & Jiu-Jitsu.
Was that the Martial Arts of choice amongst the Marines, as well? |
