| Oddly enough, this set chronologically sums up my feelings towards trance during that whole period. The first part gets me excited and intrigued, enjoying it quite a bit. But, once that overlong breakdown hits in 1999, I start to have doubts. As soon as the vocals hit in Take Me Away, I roll my eyes and desperately want to escape to the drum n' bass room or join the smokers outside. There's a few ups and downs from there, little of which resparks the same interest I had earlier. But lo', towards the end, a bit of light, and then a tune that recaptures the same atmosphere as all those early 90s spacey trance cuts I first enjoyed. I leave with a smile on my face. |

| I really am at a loss as to why I like the vocals in Take Me Away so much. Not only are they stereotypical epic schlock, they're that most unforgivable of sins: radio-friendly vocals thrown onto an instrumental original to ensure cross-over status. The Coast 2 Coast mix was mostly an instrumental too - this version was much less common than the instrumental cut. These vocals are everything I'd usually hate and deride. And yet I find them thoroughly epic. It doesn't make any sense, even to me. |

I figure I like them because they're a rare case of complimenting a nifty chord sequence that otherwise depicts what the lyrics are literally conveying. The first mix I was ever exposed to was the instrumental and even then I felt the song depicted a magic carpet ride swept high in a jet stream of celestial clouds and scantily dressed kandi whores, which is more or less the message the girl is singing. Nothing like, "Wherever you are" or, "I WILL BE K-HEEERE" or, "Everything tastes better" etc., just a simple clean, "Take me away" into unicorn land, as opposed to Anjunabeats anthem #6,042 where the synth melody and the lyrics are evidently comprised in a method akin to how Family Guy writes its jokes, manatees, ball pit, and all.
Although I did just pull that out of my ass when I realized I can't explain why I like them either :p, so I'm definitely not ruling out good ol' nostalgia. |

I wasn't much of a vocal fan even at the time, though. There has to be a reason why these vocals appealed to me when countless others didn't. |
