You don't know yourself as accurately as you think you do, and you often need other people to show you a thing your two about your personality. I used to think I was a nerd but a co-worker subtly proved me otherwise.
Since the day he found out we had a mutual friend and probably figured we could be friends as well, he's been asking me constantly if I like the stuff he likes. Finding an interest we share has proven to be a lot more difficult than we both could have imagined.
Sometimes I like to think there's a checklist he's going through, trying to see if I'm a nerd. If I fail, he will befriend me. He's been making all sorts of inquiries lately, and I systematically disappoint the poor fellow.
Gundam. Star Wars. RPG. Gundam Wing. Star Trek. Sumo. Lord of the Rings. Gundam Apha Turbo Phonex. Starbattle Gallactica. Dune. Comics. Graphic Novels. Super Mario Gundam. Starcraft. Manga. Magic, the Gathering. Gundam, at the Comicon Gathering. Starfox, Starscream, Starsky & Hutch, Starfish. C++, Asp, Ajax, and 300. Dungeons & Dragons. Saint Seiya (but, hey, I'm a Capricorn!). Megaman. Gunman. Starman, Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Ultraman, but no atman. Gundam. Starvation. Esperanto. Klingon. And, finally, even the bloody tea ceremony.
I've never had any interest in any of these things. Even the mutual friend we have fails to be "a common interest". The best memory I have with her is getting wasted and running on a frenzy around a bonfire. He'd drink tea with her mother, or something of that sort. Having us both defined by the same word seems a little odd... and my friends insist that spending a couple of hours at the gym and being a nerd is a paradox. Nerds don't really care about the human condition either, and liking foreign dramas just make me a pretentious rather than nerdy.
But, (CORe version right here) What do you think a nerd is? I'd say my diligent co-worker is a good prototype, but would you agree? Or, in a surprising turnout of events, could I be the nerd? Could we instead come to the conclusion that Nou is the nerdiest of all in this discussion?
I'm fully aware of the uselessness of this thread, but this is the chill out room and I hope you can entertain me in my pointless quest. Now, go!
