incidentally, this is my first comp w/ win7 and that's how it came. so i don't know of any other places for a "new" taskbar. |
This is the new taskbar. This is Ian's posted desktop and he is also on Win7.

Man stop being pedantic. There's hardly any difference. |

hardly any diffrlerence.....except for with whole way it works. You can't pin the old style stuff. Nor do a bunch of the intended features work. So pray tell how is it "barely" different again? |

visually, from the single screenshots available of both displays, it's barely different. i'm sure fledz didn't realize the "under-the-hood" features that aren't totally apparent from those single screencaps alone. |

are you talking about having the open programs displayed with just the icon and grouped together? if so, I still prefer the old way :o
sometimes I have to have numerous documents open and having them all grouped into one that I have to mouse over to find which one I need is more annoying than simply reading the title of the one I want in the taskbar.
also, I have it the old way and still have stuff pinned? |

Quick Launch Icons can be pinned, which, in turn, show a beveled box around them when currently running. I think he was pointing out how will had no quick launch icons? :conf:
Edit: I'm also using Win7 on my screen on the first page. I'm using the old design, though. Notice my Firefox Quick Launch is beveled. |

The Win7 taskbar is much different than Vista. There are whole host of features that were added. Jump lists, the way they group, the pinned icons have context specific menus, and there are more features that I am either not aware of or just have never used. |

All seems like fairly minor stuff to me, unless I haven't noticed some crazy new stuff. I use the new method but it's not radically different to the old one.
The programs are down there, just grouped. I still use icons on the desktop |

what he's talking about is for example, if I were to open word (and have it pop up on the task bar), if I right click on the word icon in the task bar, instead of the regular maximize, minimize, close, etc. it shows all of the recently opened documents.
right clicking on chrome for me shows a bunch of recently viewed pages, recently closed, etc.
but I don't think that has anything to do with having the task bar grouped? I have my task bar similar to tubularbill (except that I have a few things pinned), and still see most of the features he was mentioning. |

The only one I can think of (I rarely use Windows anymore so I don't see this stuff much. Mostly Linux and OS X) at the moment is like with IE, when you are downloading, the icon itself shows the progress of the download in relation to percent finished. As more and more applications are Win7 compliant, these things start getting innumerable in specificity. |
