When am I NOT trolling though? Pretty much by the second post in an argument I am trolling you if you haven't agreed with me. :p
ULookLikeAJay

My problem isn't really that I'm wrong, although I'm often wrong about things. It's more that I treat an argument as a sport or game even when it's not at all appropriate.

A mix of bestiality and paedophilia? That's not very flattering, Jenny :p

I've done that, and still do, to a degree, but I was much more aggressive about it a few years ago. It's entertaining on-line, but definitely a game in every since of the word. I've been watching a show here called The First 48 which features detectives investigating murder cases and realized just how much of a game interrogation is.

Not that, for the guilty party, it's ever winnable, but it is still played in the belief that they can control the level of exposure by feigning cooperation while attempting to mislead their interrogators. Invariably, it fails. They're almost always horrible poker players and, when the detectives see the "felony rest", where the suspect is tired and lays their head on the table, the suspect has pretty much given away all the information he or she had 'control' of.

No really...

System-J and I, when we argue, neither of us will admit that the other person "won" or "lost" the argument.

The sole fact that you even think you're in the same league as J is laughable :stongue: . He, and a few others here on TA proved several times how argumentation should be done, with good facts and even better language.

Otherwise I agree with what's been said. "trolling" should be left for such places as 4chan. I believe that in the c0r (and TA in general) it is way too neighborly to try and troll, since most people's roles here have already been defined and most of the times we already know which people are behind alts.

Agreed 100%. Another website I chat on these idiots just discovered the word "troll" and they use it as a blanket word to describe anyone they disagree with. "Troll" has become the most overused, hackneyed, platitude on discussion forums. We need a neologism to supplant this word!

It must suck, not getting the recognition you deserve.

The words "troll" and "trolling" have lost all meaning recently. It has been diluted so far that anything a person disagrees with is labelled trolling. This has become a serious ball-ache to me, for several reasons:

* It has become a mental shield against challenging opinions - trolls are everywhere on the Internet, so any argument or point that makes you feel uncomfortable is a troll post. On TA idiots like Kismet7 and Osterzone label everyone a troll, without any thought or consideration of the content of the posts they are replying to.

* It's an all-too-quick conclusion from people trying hard to be world-weary and unfazed by anything. There are a lot of people on TA who pull this act. Anyone who is ignorant, naive or stupid must be a troll, and rather take them seriously and educate them, people label them trolls and put them out of mind.

* Perhaps worst of all, it becomes a get-out-of-jail-free card for terrible arguments, failed logic, ed up reasoning. Argument slipping away from you? Invested too may posts and too much vitriol to lose face by admitting you were wrong? No worries, just claim you were trolling all along! Nou does this repeatedly, iTranscendence does it, countless others do it. It becomes a form of doublethink. Most people who are engaged in an Internet debate are not interested in whether they're right, they're interested in saving face. If they can walk away from a thread with the smug lie that they've just been winding the other party up they will never actually amend their beliefs and will repeat the cycle over and over.

It's not enough any more to simply "not feed the trolls". Time was a troll was someone like Jay, who posted entirely to get a reaction out of someone. It doesn't just mean "A on the Internet". People who invest any value or importance in the content of their posts - not the desired reaction - are not trolls.

Incidentally, you score absolutely no humour points for either responding with "You're a troll" or by trolling me in this thread. This means you, IGK.

well said, man. i've noticed the same things you've noticed by all of the users you've mentioned.

jay's poop.
