His kicks sound tiny and his bass are "ok" but nothing spectacular. I also notice he doesn't have that many fans. Not like it matters but it definitely matters more than just being the "first".

well partly because he doesn't have that many fans which isn't quite true. He just doens't have many fans West of paris.
And i've been a fan since day one
I also find everything he does is a touch above everyone else
He has also remained cutting edge for 10 years.
The weird thing is that every dj plays his records, he just isn't very good at marketing I think.

yes I have a hard on for scot project and really don't understand how people don't. How can you not think the bass on the sun track isn't good ? That is about as funky and hard as you can get in trance. And in Ivory, he manages to fuse trance and electro into something unique and organic. His form is also immaculate. Better than any other producer. He doesn't just throw in ideas for the sake of it.

moar quality?

- better sources
- stop using samples, learn to program
- better patches
- better patterns
- better rifs
- better levels
- better low/high cuts
- better FX
- better dynamics
- better ARRANGEMENT

It's not that hard to define "better" it's hard to make it your own and become a quality producer.

Add vocals...

Vocals make everything better.

And make it poppy, the masses love poppy, catchy tunes.

/sarcasm

Lots of practice and listening to LOTS of current music.

Most of all doing what YOU enjoy, and making what YOU enjoy listening to /end

Well something that no one else has mentioned yet that can help you reach the next level in quality is to improve your monitoring. Treat your room, get the best monitors you can afford and if possible a high quality DAC. Once you can really hear what is going on with your tunes it will allow you to make better choices with regards to eq, reverb etc.

My production improved leaps and bounds once i treated my room and upgraded my monitors and DAC.

Steven Slate's new console replication. The one button mix. If you can't hear the difference, it is because you aren't good/cool enough.

You say you mostly use presets, but just because their made by professionals doesn't mean they will fit perfect in you're mix. So maybe it goes deeper than the effects. Try stripping all effects off and make the ground of the sound fit perfectly before going over to adding effects.

Problem is my wife will say we first need to attend to;

New car for her
New roof
New flashing under the roof (£3k)
Repair front drive
New oil fired boiler
New radiators
Decorating
New home PC (non music related)
New TV setup (7 yr old cr tube currently)
Pay lumps off the 2 mortgages

etc etc etc

yikes you are married. Forget it. pack it in.
You really need to start doing it as a job before you get married or all is lost.
