Since the energy is so intense during that kind of set, it always dies a bit earlier compared to house room. Don't forget that Black & Blue is a house even in the first place and 60-70% of the crowd is used to house music

You also have to consider the fact that the first room you would enter was the house room, so automaticaly people tend to pack the first one and not always discover the second room

For a first trance room at Black & Blue, it was busier than we expected

Very happy with the results :D

you guys had more people than last year it appeared, and I feared the trance room would be empty but it did very well in that time frame you mentioned.

I'll soon write a detailed review.... maybe from work :p

so the question remains did BNB make more revenue this year then last year, I am leaning towards more this year

IMO, there was more people this year, but not loads more. With 2 rooms, two setups, more djs, it'll be hard to say that more money was made.

This event, again, as I said last year, sadly needs to be promoted more main stream, (i.e. not only in the village), I don't want to sound like negative nancy, but I would really love to see this event return to its glorious attendances of the past.

More djs does not mean more expensive :p

HERNAN CATTANEO

For an event that boldly re-defined itself in 2010 (whether or not by circumstance), Black and Blue far exceeded my expectations on several fronts.

Similar to last year, I was able to arrive from hotel to dance floor in 30 minutes, sans VIP. For some reason, I expected to walk into a rather empty Palais, judging by how short the line was when I arrived at 11:30PM.

However, the house room was brimming with bodies, and the vibe was electric, due in part to the set being dropped by Rosabel and in part to the many women in that room ;)

As Louis said earlier, house music is a virtual slam dunk in Montreal. Even though the bookings included a 'prog' dj, two djs who play in Montreal ad nauseum, and the rest relative unknowns to those outside of the circuit community, Blaok and Blue vets, and house music enthusiasts, the floor was packed.

My only issue was that the house room bookings were apparently kept in the dark, perhaps even literally - the only indicator I could find for the timeslots was on a poorly-lit sign between the two rooms.

"Chus and Ceballos at 208AM"

Was I looking at a timeslot or a bus schedule? :p

Rosabel's (Ralph Rosario and Abel Aguilera) event-opening set was intense and perhaps should have been substituted for DJ Paulette's oddly flowing, partly electro set.

The Rosabel set is what house is supposed to be about at these kinds of events: sexy, attitude-driven, techy, tribally, diva vocals, funky rhythms, the kind of electronic dance music that moves you and that everyone, within a few minutes of exposure, gets.

Chus and Ceballos lived up to their once lofty reputation that was cemented during those outstanding 2005 and 2006 Black and Blue sets. While their 2010 set touched on several of the influences and directions the duo has taken since 2006, they also did bring the drums back at certain points, in a Rio Carnival-like feel.

Mark Anthony's set was perhaps the most difficult on the house side as he had to transition from Paulette's sub-par one and then do the right thing for Hernan Cattaneo by slowing it down so Mr Cattaneo could create his own mood.

Anthony was able to do just that, however. It was signature Mark Anthony: beautiful mixing and flow, superb track selection with even snippets of dark, trippy vocals and tech minimal. The only faux pas I noticed is that he slowed it down perhaps a tad too much for Hernan. I got bored at that point :p

Hernan began his set with some tech minimal of his own that went from a simple groove to a funky, techy groove. It was structured terrifically, picking up in intensity with each subsequent track.

It was a bold move to have Hernan added to the bill but the man clearly delivered.

ANOTHER BOLD MOVE

In a move that many thought would alienate both the gay and straight house community and would not be enough to overcome the stigma that many have towards Black and Blue, this one has to go down as one of the boldest the Montreal electronic community has seen in quite some time.

Now did the addition of the trance room at Black and Blue 2010 succeed? It is all in how one perceives success. But from my point-of-view, Louis and company pulled all the right moves to put the notion of trance at Black and Blue effectively into our heads.

While it was disconcerting to see how empty the trance room was when I had first arrived to the Palais, by the time Marco V hit the decks, the room was bustling.

Marco V's set was intense, particularly when he was dropping hard trance, which to me sounded more like thumping old school techno. While I do not care much for a melodic trance set like the one I heard from Tydi, when it is interlaced with the kinds of sinister, angry and aggressive sounding techno tracks, once cannot help but become consumed by it.

The room was even more packed by the time Gareth Emery hit the decks. I was also impressed by how many gays were eating up the trance room as well.

If the music is good, the people will embrace it

Aly and Fila's set was also very impressive, as was Simon Patterson’s; both sets also contained some hard stuff, to the point that one could say that the unicorns were on steroids Sunday night :p

Like anything else there is room for improvement in a few areas. As mentioned earlier, I would like to see better indicators for the house room slots, perhaps have it on the flyers that were inside the venue.

As well, the concession stand needs to have electrolyte-replacing energy drinks, protein bars, the kinds of foods required for a 15-hour event.

However, with the added seating areas, efficient entry and solid bookings that have now included trance, Black and Blue 2010 was a resounding success, in my opinion

Special kudos to Fran666 as well; it was great meeting you and hopefully I will see you on the 22nd at Circus with Danny Salvaje (and that other guy named Mark Knight) :p ;)

I agree with that. Sadly the US recession is apparently partly to blame as the circuit parties are thing of the past, especially if the Americans have to spend more with the exchange rate to boot.

Only avenue perhaps is to get more ppl from here to go (i.e. trance) and to have BeB/Playground to continue to do what they do best :p
Picardilicious
First time at BnB... stayed in the trance room cause thats what I'm into.

I was there early.... tyDi was impressive for trance folks.. he was so into the crowd, it was really nice, supermanning around the crowd lol.

Live performances were kinda cheesy. but hey, I saw emma hewitt lol.

Marco V killed it, and the transition to gareth was nice.

Although I'm pissed that Emery started with a Tiesto track (promised never to listen anything that tiesto has made since his lousy performance at beach club)
The right speaker at one point almost failed in Emery's set(i started to panic)but it was quickly resolved. Props to the organisers.

To Louis and Francis (or anyone else),
Pretty please with a cherry on top...Can it be possible to have Gareth Emery's set from the show?

thx to all organizers, it was a safe , clean rave! see you next year!
