what else was it based on? quality of releases and live appearances based on some sort of professional opinion? or something else entirely?

What in my list do you disagree with? Like I said from 99-05 it's easy to say who was at their peak in which year, from 2006 and on it's a toss up between guys like Markus, Sander and Gareth

I based it on which DJ had the biggest impact on the scene and also things like releases, and memorable sets.

2003 is a tough year because you could give it to 4 guys and I wouldn't argue with you but I gave it to Ferry as a sentimental award for what he's done for trance in general and he had his best album and a couple of mix compilation CD's that were great and some memorable sets that year

I believe he's asking what frostdude's criteria was/is.

actually some of the top 5 were adjusted last year and were not based strictly on votes, according to a source who has 100% credibility.

sorry guys. was actually asking what he was referring to here

you can call it a professional opinion for the adjustment process, if there aim was to make more house in the top 5 to get a larger audience listening to edm. perhaps they expected some kind of spillover effects from house to more mainstream audiences. it seemed to have worked though, because i've definitely been seeing a lot more house at places that advertise their events as "top 40".

of course, djmag will neither confirm nor deny that they adjusted the votes, but i highly trust the person who told me about it.

So you think Gareth Emery had the biggest impact on the global scene last year?

Maybe he had the biggest impact on you personally.

But to say that he was the most relevant and popular dj in the world in 2009, even according your criteria...thats just not the case.

I think Gareth is the man btw, not arguing against that. But the DJ Mag poll is not about who is the best, or really even about quality at all. It is purely a popularity contest. Maybe Gareth will be the most popular in a few years, who knows. But definitely not this year, and certainly not last year. Guys like PVD, Tiesto, Armin, Deadmau5, Guetta, and a host of others are just much much bigger names, deserved or not.

The same rings true for other guys you mentioned, like Cosmic Gate, Sander Van Doorn, even Markus and Ferry really. All great djs / producers, of course...but these guys were never really THE most popular in any given year. There's no shame in that. I actually prefer a lot of those names to the guys who have held the "#1" spot.

speaking of popularity contests..

what about all the people who probably voted for "swedish house mafia" as opposed to "axwell" "ingrosso" etc?

do you think they'll make SHM a separate entry than individual votes? if we're talking a popularity contest then it's pretty obvious that no one's made it bigger than they have in the last year.

(and even though this is a trance forum and SHM are subject to some cheesy stuff, i saw them live @ m2 earlier this year and again at ultra and they really did bring down the house, no homo)

it's a trance forum but a lot of people on ta don't even like trance and dj mag covers all genres. the shm guys said they didn't want anyone to vote for "swedish house mafia" but vote for them as individuals. personally i think that was a BAD move because i'm sure lots of people missed that memo and even though i didn't, i wasn't willing to use 3 of my 5 votes on them.

thats actually a GREAT point. i wonder what happens when some ppl vote for ax, steve or seb individually and others for for SHM. deep dish was always as a group, as are k&a, CG, etc. but sasha & diggers were always separate. hmmmm

Probably just lost votes in the end. If it was about popularity SHM, Deadmau5, guetta and tiesto

As someone mentioned, the mainstream does not really vote on DJmag, the vote just doesnt matter for hardly anyone on the list anymore except for # 1.

It used to be if someone topped the top20 you could put that on a flyer and it would attract extra turnout, now a days, if its not # 1 or the names I mentioned above then it just does not matter.
