I believe pharmacists make prescriptions and don't need a degree in philosophy. :conf: |

LOL, actually I want to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience once I'm done and do research on things like morality and how the brain constructs the mind. My first major was in Engineering and only now realized this is what I should have done from the beginning because quite frankly I don't want to do anything in engineering for a living anymore and science has always been a passion of mine. You can almost say that I had an epiphany after a period of existential crisis. :p
The reason I'm getting a degree in Philosophy first is because I believe that Science and Philosophy go hand in hand and therefore a scientist with no proper philosophical education will fail at making prescriptions or at the very least, interpretations that derivate from his work. Even moreso when you consider the field I want to get into. You just cannot get into morality and the mind and ignore several centuries of moral philosophy and philosophy of mind.
Even though 'jobless bum' is always a possibility, I've never been so motivated to pursue anything in my life before. :) |
righteous, go for it then!
i'm bringin' back "righteous" man. |

This looks really, really interesting. Are you looking at it through a Robert Hare type of lens?
EDIT: Ah, saw the Sam Harris book. That's on our Amazon wish list. Still - interesting. |

id just concentrate on the science, get a job in the field im interested in so can afford to eat, and THEN waste my time with philosophy. doing philosophy part time while you worked would be a cake-walk. |

You mean fMRI or his PCL-R? Or are you referring to the scope of his work in psycopathy? |

His work in psychopathy (and/or all of the above). |

The thing is that in order to do that I would have to get a scholarship or a grant to go study Neuroscience abroad. No universities offer it in Guatemala. I've looked and looked and the options for someone like me with a major completely unrelated with Neuroscience are zero. With Philosophy it's different, because I can get my degree here while working and then apply for grants or scholarships to go abroad and get the PhD I want. The options then open up. |
