Studio Monitors?

Bought some Mackie MR8 monitors a few years ago... and they've been way too powerful for my apartment the whole time. The bass is too heavy... I have to have the bass especially cut down and never play them at more than like 20% of their total volume potential.

So now I am trying to sell those and buy a less powerful pair.

I am thinking of getting ones with either a 5 or 6 inch sub (compared to the 8 inch I had on my mackies). Is a 5 inch monitor powerful enough for regular use inside an apartment or should I aim for 6 inch monitors?

Thinking of getting either the Jbl LSR2325P or KRK RP6 G2.

Anyone have any advice?

the JBLs gets good reviews around. also consider Genelec 8020. basically find a budget and then go a little over it.

When I bought studio monitors 2 years ago, I took the time to listen to all models I was interested in. Yamaha, KRK and Event were the the top of my list.

I decided to go with the Event TR6. What I like about these monitors is that they are flat. Perfect to my ears. KRK were boosting a bit too much the bass to my taste and Yamaha were not the same sound quality.

Event TR6 for me. But I don't know if they are sold anymore

Ignore the cretin saying that this is the wrong forum.

The JBLs seem to get glowing reviews on here and Gear Slutz, but the best way to make sure is to see if you can listen to a pair a local store anywhere in your area. If not, at least try and find somewhere on the net that will give you a grace period in which you can send them back if you're not happy with them. Being that I suspect you're going to be using them predominantly for DJing and not so much for production, I doubt that you need to worry too much about the character of the speaker being inherently different when auditioning them in a large open space such as a Guitar Centre etc.

One of my housemates has a pair of KRK RP5 G2s, and they sound quite harsh to my ears. I have a pair of HS80Ms but they'll be no good to you as the bass can become quite overpowering in small rooms.

Hey there,

I'd recommend getting whatever monitor has the flattest audio profile (however you say that...) ie, not bassier or augmented in any way, but as authentic to the true sound as possible.

My bro has Mackie HR 824s also and i find them bassy also... I got the HR 624s after he got his 824s and i LOVE mine. I have been producing with them for 8+ years in my apartments and also now in my studio. I don't find them too bassy either. That said, I recently bought the 5" mackie ones to have good sound in my apartment now too, but they sound bassy to me... Then again, they were also at a much cheaper price point than the 624s and were not supposed to have a completely neutral sonic profile...while i believe the 624s and other ones do...(not sure about the models you mentioned)

Another thing that could help could be sound treatment, cuz bass frequencies can reflect off walls, add up and wash out the mix with too much bass...that's always a hidden sonic killer, too...

good luck!

He's talking about himself - he usually posts in the "idiots who continuously spout nonsensical opinion because they don't actually know much" forum.

Back to the cellar, orTo - someone will be along shortly to serve you your bucket of fishheads.
