but i've never got the impression that it was a war on islam, or that people were saying it was, i thought it was always about religious extremists.

its apparent you havent given much attention to their news/media because its definitely been a war on islam/muslims.
even in Britain its somewhat similar. (but different issues about them taking over the place)
