These here string riffs at about 0.40 :-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exKwPZIR5v8
I think i'm hearing a cello (or bass in fact?) bottom note and layered violas and violins. I'm not sure what expressive terms to use but I wanted to create a similar feeling sound for a Halloween collaboration i'm doing.
I've got the Kontakt 4 library and that's it.
Is there a particlar articulation that's being used or is it mostly volume?
Cheers! |

too low for a cello, definitely a double bass. The rest is strings 1 and 2. He should of used the viola for the pattern between B and G for when the chord hits, the progression cannot naturally fall with the normal registers as would a viola playing that part. A cello doubled with a bassoon would of also done the track very nicely as that would be near the high sweet spot of the cello. No special articulation. Just normal detache but that is what separates the people that know how to orchestrate and those that put notes in a sequencer.
Unfortunately , this tune is just too Hollywood cliche suspense for me to enjoy. The chord progression, the string movement motions. There are better references in actual score music. For this type of score, check out 6th sense, Zimmer's 7 days which is great by the way, umm too many to list. But it is basically playing minor chords a major/minor 3rd a part. That is the mystery cliche. Play C minor in root position. Then Eb minor in 2nd inversion with Bb being the bass note ( 5th of the chord ) and maybe go to Gb minor after that. And when you want to resolve the sort of shroud of mystery, that that minor chord no matter the inversion and lower the 1 and 5 to make it a major chord. Sounds like a big whole opening up with sunlight.
get LASS. |

Nice, cheers.
I'm pretty ok with the chord progressions, although that wasn't really the part I had a bit of trouble with. In fact I'm up for a bit of non resolution as it's supposed to have a bit of tension in it. It looks like there's going to be a bit of Rammstein action in the track too. Saying that i'll look at those suggestions too as i've no real idea about the melody yet.
As for it being a Hollywood cliche, that's entirely what i'm trying to achieve ;) The track will most likely be very tongue in cheek.
You could always sell a bottle of champagne and buy me LASS. In fact, make that two. I'll need a new machine to run it on as well. |

| download the crack. East West would do what this does although I don't particularly like that library as it is cumbersome. I'm sure the orchestral stuff in Kontakt could not be too bad ? |

Even if I were inclined to, the multi gigabyte nature of these things would destroy my machine.
Kontakt will probably be more than ok for my purposes though tbh, the older included VSL stuff is pretty tasty |

can't your good looks get you out of this one ?
Symphobia is pretty good for general hits if you don't mind the way you can't orchestrate. It actually is pretty useful for those that haven't practiced orchestration for years and it is small. 12 gigs I think. The low string staccatos sound great. |

I suppose all this talk of upper class and being awesome and then your mention of such a paltry computer makes me go hmmm. My sense of humour is quite sharp. When someone says a rather modest bottle of champagne is grocery quality, I suppose I expected that you would at least have the funds for a computer. Nothing wrong with being poor but why were you fronting like you were married into aristocracy.
i'm still hurt you don't think i'm special.I think you're special. |

Well, it is supermarket champagne in the UK. Get a vintage Pol Poger or at least some Perrier Jouet. Veuve is rather nice as a drinking champagne though. Bollox to moet though. Cna't stand the stuff. Even the imperial white or the the Rose.
Don't worry. I think you're special. Like uncle Ruprect. |

the thing is that I drink champagne daily well half a bottle between me and my girlfriend as a night cap. I can't afford the fine nectar described. I have a few grand crus caliber champagne but i'm waiting for a celebration. The rose from Laurent Perrier is delicious. I do have a large stock of champagne but most is in the veuve cliquot to Laurent Perrier region. I find the rose despite hints of fruit quite dry and satisfying.
I also save the good stuff for company. I am a great host although I am quite selective as to who gets to see my castle - 3 1/2
I suppose USA and UK vary greatly in quality of wine as france is just a few clicks away. My girlfriend told me about all the great wine she had for a few euros when she was doing a role in paris. The prices here are much higher than UK. Well i don't know for sure but it makes sense. |

Your descriptions have got me quite thirsty indeed. And let me put some perspective on this: I think you're doing better than most of Veuve or LP is your main tipple, I sure as hell can't do that regularly, much as I have the taste for the fine things in life. I actually like VC and LP a lot. If I'm buying and in that price range I'll happily walk home with either of those. The cheap Pol Rogers are nearly as bad as Moet so I just tend to buy nothing lower than those when I want Champers.
Totally agree on the LP rose - one of my absolute faves, hands down. I actually have this amazing bottle in my fridge from a very limited small production. Only 30 cases were made and I got two bottles, at $70 a pop. I've had one and it's absolutely stunning, quite annoyed I can't get more but that's some of the joy I suppose. Saving that for a special occasion as well.
The UK is generally flooded with cheap brand name booze, most of it truly crap australian wines, where the whites have been Oaked to within a shade of it's life and the red is nothing more than end of night plonk to finish you off.
You can get great wine but you really have to go in to the £15 range for starters and while that doesn't sound a lot, after exchange you're looking at $25 and that easily gets you a nice bottle here.
I suppose I'm a bit lucky here in California as there are some great local wines wich means the foreign imports have to be extremely good and/or very well priced to compete.
France is a different thing. I've had unlablled table, costing nothing that were simply outstanding and it's abundant. Paris can get price in the wanky bars but just go in to any cafe and you'll find wine for a couple of Euros that make you want to live there.
I think I know what I'm doing tonight..... |

its what we do on work nights. We pick random show tunes from fakebooks and we just play and she sings. Great healthy fun. I am the fakebook king. Any tune you put in front of me , any key and I will rock the out of it. I am quite popular at any party with a piano. I listen to modern music so my jukebox includes anything in the top 40 for the last 40 years. Well give or take some. Although the drunker Iget , the more I play in C.
last week . some ass asked for Jayz NY ? and he thought I was too old to know it. Bammmm! And my girlfriend also has this awful love for pop. |
