Recently there has been a huge political fallout between Canada and UAE, and they are making it worse. Apparently we Canadians hurt their precious feelings somehow. Well, so then - those Jew-haters. They blew it out of proportion. Sorry to be so blunt, but I would never ever step my foot in that country (or the ones around it).

I think it all started with the Canadian government not allowing more flights into Canada from their national airlines Emerates. But yes they are certainly causing themselves more harm than good by doing this. Less tourism $$ for them.

Much of the damage to Canada was already done - Canada was forced to shut down there all their military transit/support operations for Afghanistan (and pull out all personnel). It was a crucial flight route, but good thing we have Cyprus/Turkey/Germany who kindly offered transitional bases for a new route to service our operations in Afghanistan.

UAE can go suck a nut. They are being babies diplomatically speaking. Someone go get them their bottle.

Good for canada for standing up for itself for once. Same thing on Israel today too. Harper said that there are more votes to be gained in bashing israel yet he has decided to stand behind them even if it means fewer votes and not getting a UN seat. Again kudos. Its about time we stand up for our values.

lol, are not any of you concerned with how piss poor the conservatives track record has been with foreign policy???

If this was a one off event, ok sure...blame it on the uae. But given all of the follies of the conservatives as of late...does this not send off any alarm bells with any of you? wake the up.

I've been to the UAE, and I plan on going again (relatively soon). I also have multiple friends who travel there on a regular basis and good friends who live there. This is a royal pain in the ass.

When is the last time this has happened to Canada? I mean, really.

Any those jew haters? Yea, maybe you're right....damn those nana poopoo caca heads!

I don't see how this is doing that. Poor foreign diplomacy and using standing up for anti-semitism as a reason for falling out of favour in the UN are standing up for our values? That's a pretty delusional train of thought. Standing up for Israel is NOT the reason for Canada's deteriorating foreign image. Non-action and hypocrisy on a lot of key global issues as well as horrible foreign diplomacy is the real problem here. You can start with Copenhagen.

Canadians are so apathetic and out of touch with these issues, it's quite disturbing really. We have one of the worst governments, diplomatically speaking in power right now in the history of our country and we're throwing out " the UAE, the world type comments? How the did Canada ever come to be like this? This isn't how we do things. We're not the ing USA.

The UAE, come on, arguably the most progressive gulf/arab state and we manage to up the relationship? Why, because we want to allow star alliance to monopolize international travel routes? Because we're afraid Emirates is going to be come in and steal international air traffic? As consumers, you all should be ing infuriated. Your government is ing you, just like it has with the major cell phone carriers, and we scream the UAE! lol, good for us.

lol, oh really? based on your original comments I'm not surprised with your obvious disagreement...I don't really care to hear your ultra right wing we are canada here us roar response. i'm actually not off base, read some international publications, pick up the economist from time to time, talk to an academic here and there. a self-righteous "let's stand up for our values" argument when we're not even ing standing up for anything and merely just making excuses to hide something as simple as very very very very poor diplomacy, across many many events is a mentality that is SO detrimental for our country moving forward. come on man.

Here's one for you:

Canada's foreign policy:
Snubbed
Better at doughnuts than diplomacy
Oct 14th 2010 | Ottawa

IN 2003 Bono, a rock star and poverty campaigner, proclaimed that “The world needs more Canada”. This week, the world decided it didn’t. On October 12th Canada lost its bid for a rotating seat on the United Nations Security Council, for the first time since the organisation was founded in 1945. That Germany was preferred was acceptable; not so, being passed over in favour of Portugal. Stephen Harper’s Conservative government blamed the opposition leader, Michael Ignatieff, for the snub, because he had suggested that Canada did not deserve the seat. But many countries apparently share Mr Ignatieff’s dislike of Mr Harper’s foreign policy. This has featured outspoken support of Israel’s hardline government, alienating the Muslim countries that make up a third of the UN’s membership. Mr Harper has also made few friends in Africa (where he has closed embassies), or in Europe and among island states (with his feeble policy on climate change). He came to power in 2006 sceptical of Canada’s traditional multilateralism (“a weak-nation strategy”, he said) and of the UN itself. Last year he raised eyebrows by choosing to inaugurate a doughnut-innovation centre rather than attend the UN General Assembly. His country’s commitment to UN peacekeeping missions, for which a former Liberal prime minister once won a Nobel prize, declined sharply under the previous government and has not increased under Mr Harper. So why bother to seek a Security Council seat? The Conservatives seem now to realise that strong links to the United States are no longer enough in a changing world. Canada is still a big UN paymaster. As host of the G8 summit this year, it pushed for more aid for maternal and child health in poor countries. But its overtures to China and India came too late to sway the vote. The snub has handed Mr Harper’s opponents a club with which to beat him. Jean Chrétien, a former Liberal prime minister, noted acidly that “In Canada, we have to realise that what you do has consequences.” Pollsters say the public attach little importance to a UN seat. But this was supposed to be a year in which Canada would figure large on the world stage. It started with the winter Olympics in Vancouver and the economy’s swift recovery from recession, and continued with hosting the G8 and G20 summits. It seems to have ended early.

The Americas

Better at donuts than diplomacy? Are you kidding me? This is the most unbiased and respected commentary on social, political, and economic events currently happening in our world today, read by anyone intelligent enough to actually understand the scope of the issues discussed, and this is how we're portrayed to that crowd?

You're really going to play that 'stand up for our values' card when even The Economist is bashing us?? So,The Economist is off base? Lol, have fun defending that one dude.

Then they came for the trade unionists,

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.
