Monsters (2010) (pg. 2)

Lilith
I was sort of expecting something like District 9, but its not as paced or exciting in a lot of ways. Probably give it a 6/10 because its quite decently acted and hasn't fallen hopelessly into a lot of human behaviour/alien clichés that you'd normally get in this genre (which is very good thing!)

It's eminently watch-able, but its not really something I'm tempted to go back and watch twice

Ah, I can definitely see The Mist influencing it.

Oh. The Mist was pretty . My enthusiasm is dampened a bit now.

It's time for a revision.

I would actually give it a 5 I think. Closer to 4 than 6. Just didn't work for me.

Based on the trailer I was expecting more action. When it never really came I was disappointed. I was waiting for some kick ass action and got a love story instead. If I really knew what I was getting into I would have enjoyed it more instead of saying WTF after there's a buildup and nothing happens.:sadgreen:

Have fun being destroyed by the giant alien overlords when they read your newly adjusted review. :o

I've read some creative names for your biceps in my days, but this... wow!

What didn't you like about it? I'll admit I was expecting it to be kind of action-packed ala District 9 just due to the trailers, but I was pleasantly surprised it was more dramatically-paced. It wasn't a movie about humans thwarting the alien menace; it was essentially about humans learning to cope with the forces of nature and animal life, especially our own. This is where it is somewhat like The Mist, thematically, but the pacing, characters, and circumstances vastly differ. It's not like The Mist, it's merely got a few similarities that can likely be reduced to mere bullet points.

I will admit I was monumentally impressed by the fact that it was done on a completely threadbare budget. It seems somewhat shallow to judge a film based on budget, but I think they did a LOT with very, very little; Monsters completely appeared to be a film that had - easily - 50 times the budget.

The political undertones were very subtle as well, even more so than District 9, and attested to the fact that in the face of nature, our personal policies and sensibilities of justice mean very little. The scene where they are gathered around the campfire, asking questions of their escorts, really drove home the aim of the director to make an "Afghanistan War" movie about an alien presence brought to Earth, and what the effect of this might very well be.

Was it a love story? What is the nature of love? Our two characters found themselves pitted in a situation and with immediately concurrent goals and emotional investments - is this any different than the two cephalopods meeting at the gas station toward the end of the movie? Haddaway had his way.

It was not a perfect film by any means, but I think it raised enough important questions and provided enough important scenarios to warrant it as one of the best films of 2010. Imagine that the Infected Zone was in fact about 400 miles east of where it was in the movie - what is the humanity behind such an event? What are we suddenly forced to deal with?

The soundtrack, composed by Jon Hopkins, is quite superb, and available on Beatport:

I've yet to see the film, and to see how (well) the score compliments it.

ing great movie. It's like Cloverfield meets Book of Eli somehow.

It's almost worth seeing just for the cinematography, alone, but everything else in the movie was excellent, too.

The dialogue most certainly wasn't excellent.

"I'm not sure I'm happy to see it." Fair enough.
"I feel like I could cry, but I don't know if it would be a good cry or a bad cry." CLANG CLANG.

In fact, a whole lot of the film laid it on really thick. I'm not sure why you think the political undertones were subtle. I understand a large part of it was improvised or shot opportunistically, but that just seems to mean there were few scripted lines with which to convey the film's themes, and as such they dropped like anvils. I rate it at 6/10.

Same. Looked nice enough, but didn't do much else for me.
