Best smaller sized camera for taking shots in a club?
View this Thread in Original format

So, I hate my current camera, a Canon PowerShot SD 960 IS b/c all of the pictures I take when we go out to clubs never come out correct.

I am looking for a better camera, something that's not too bulky that I can fit in a pocket (most likely) that will better capture the club images.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Additionally, if there is a great way to manually set up my own camera (maybe i'm not already doing it), I would love the suggestions.

Thanks!

I've got the SD980 and love it, but you really gotta tweak all the settings. If you're willing to deal with something a LITTLE bigger try the Canon S95 or S90. Basically it's like their top end consumer camera the G11 but compact. My friend has one and her photos from shows come out amazing

Yeah, pretty much the Canon S95 is your only option. The f/2.0 lens is amazing, and something very few point and shoots have, especially ones that fit in your pocket.

Plus it has a full range of Manual controls, as well as the ability to shoot in RAW.

yeah I have that Nokia Cool Pix ... i'm pretty happy with it and it's super low profile.

Canon S95. You shouldn't be considering anything else.

I have a S90 and I LOVE it. I would not call it a point and shoot. Need to know a little something about photography to take advantage of it. The thing is it is really a pretty large camera plus the lens protrudes as well. Have to be wearing baggy pants to be able to keep it in a pocket.

There is also the Canon SD4000 IS which is a consumer version of the S95. Pretty much all the same features, minus all the pro stuff like RAW shooting and manual modes.

So S95 = if you want RAW shooting and Manual photography
SD4000 = if you just want to press the button and go :)

Don't bother with the S8100, its not designed for low-light photography.

Here is a pretty good review of the fast-lens P&S cameras. The Nikon and Lumix have higher ISO settings than the canon....if you dare go that far.

hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm going to try to get my hands on a few of them and try to get an idea of which one is the best fit. The S95 looks and sounds pretty good.

If the 4000 uses the same sensor as the S95, that would be the winner IMO. The S90 is bulky enough that unless I am taking pictures in low light, we just take Michell's Canon SD940 instead.

I was going to get the LX5 but its was even bigger than the S90 and didn't have a built in lens protector. It uses a lens cap like a DSLR that must be manually removed and replaced every time you take a picture. The S90 is very usable up to ISO3200. I use it in clubs all the time with little artifacts/noise.

Oh, and the sound on the S90 is unusable. Think the S95 fixed that and added HD but I haven't seen any reviews to verify the sound doesn't blow out in clubs.

Anyone have the Nikon S8100? I've read some good things about low light performance, but what really works out in the clubs is really what matters.
