I loved it! Such a nice change of scenery and so much to see, with lots of room to dance. |
Where?
Every time I went they had a giant collection of VIP seating smack-dab in the middle of the dance floor, the only room left was a narrow hallway for people to walk around. Like, sure, if you wanted to go upstairs where the sound was a bit muffled, there was often space to dance, but as much as I like to dance, I rarely enjoy muffled sounds, and don't like to find my own secluded corner of the club to work my groove. I want to be somewhere nearby OTHER dancers to A) learn a thing or two and B) Feed of their energy. Circa, on the nights that I attended, didn't provide that space.
Also, falling glass from above was a very real danger on any given night. Glass bottles were often dropped upstairs, and the subsequent shards of glass would be kicked around by patrons walking around and fall to the ground-floor below.
Good Riddance I say. |

It didn't make any money because the interest payments were so high. |

Seems like the city truly threw it off by delaying the liquor license. An extra $1.68 million + interest in liabilities, with no revenue.
If that was the city's dastardly plan, it worked perfectly. |
How is it legal for the city to do that? The public is penalized for late payments, doing things which arent in accordance to regulation, etc, etc. But the city is immune? Has anyone heard about Beta in Waterloo? Same problem;
The city didnt give them their liquor license and delayed it for three weeks, months after their planned opening night and nearly a month after the actual opening night. On top of that, they reduced their maximum capacity number from 1,100 to 600. And to add insult to injury, the cops forced them to shutdown on opening night at 3am instead of of 5am.
Beta opened up November 18 and each night since has been closed, because of the liqour license.
I'm starting to seriously loathe Canada and its people. Not only is this country extremely regulated and bureaucratic, the citizens DONT GIVE A . Canadias are easily the biggest passive pussies to have landed on this planet. The government says jump, the people say 'how high?' Nobody gives a about bull regulations and ficticious laws, the whole cell phone in car ban, the ridiculous $10,000 fine for speeding, the recent law about the number of parked cars on your own driveway, the government telling you what time you cant handle your alcohol, cigarettes being FORCED to be hidden in shops, cant drink alcohol at a beach with friends and thats just the beginning. This country is ing STERILE.
On another note, Circa had its moments. My favourite night was Nick Warren. One of the best sets I've ever heard in Toronto. Though it was nothing compared to what I heard him play a few months later when I saw him in Patra, Greece. Speaking of Greece, I wasnt limited to a 2am alcohol cutoff time, or limited to smoking outdoors, or being told to go home at 3am, or not being allowed to drink and party outside. And yet, the streets were clean, there were no fights, and not a cop in sight. Go Canada. |

you have to understand that its not as simple as just filling out a piece of paper and getting it filed in order to get a liquor licence.
Licences for permanent establishments are granted by the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario and you have to get municipal approvals to indicate an establishment meets Fire Code, Building Code and Public Health regulations.
When you take your application to the City Services Registry they have to forward the application to Building, Health, and Fire divisions, contact the Councillor for the area, contact the police and Alcohol & Gaming Commission, and various other things before they can return the application to you.
After you receive the application back you then send it to the Alcohol & Gaming Commission so they can start their procedures. Their procedures include issuing the licence after they receive all the city compliance letters and OPP checks.
It isn't unusual for new business to run into delays simply because the owners don't fully understand what needs to be finished before a liquor licence can be issued. With construction delays and whatnot it makes it impossible for the licence to get issued because the business doesn't meet fire code or building code, which I believe was one of the main issues for Beta, they still hadn't completely finished construction when they were suppose to open. Once they got clearance from Building, Health, and Fire divisions they could submit the paper work to get the licence. |

Middle of the dance floor towards the back. Tons of room to dance. I've been up at the front with no problem either on occasion. |

That is a crock of . Our taxes pay for their services. Government workers expect pay from citizens on time, but the government is immune to penalties from shoddy work. 3 week delay at Beta and the ridiculous delay at Circa are inexcusable. The government doesnt deserve taxes after that kind of incompetence. I dont care what kind of process it is, the issue is that the standards on government are not met and they take far too long, further proving my stance on how bureaucratic this country is. |

It CAN be worse in Europe...but at least they're more laid back so it makes up for it.
TO's too much of a nanny city...very very annoying. |

most of the delays are the fault of the people wanting the licence...not the government. Beta set an opening day before they were even close to finishing construction...you can't blame the government for wanting to make sure the building is safe for people before they start issuing licences that would allow them to start business. |

The downfall of Circa was having to pay $140,000 a month in rent!
That's INSANE!
however, it's still 10k less than what was being paid when it was Lucid :p |
