The operative word is "special". |

I've never been on one of those... is it awesome or scary or what? |

all has to be perfect balance (i.e. Earth)...even if we were say some 100 miles closer or farther from the sun, life here would be very, VERY different! (if not non-existant) |
Some 100 miles? You do realise that the distance from earth to sun varies by about half a million kilometres depending on the time of year right? 100 miles of so would make no difference at all. |

Nonono, i'm not talking about the farthest point and the shortest point (forget the names of those particular points)....but if it were some distance further or closer at those particular spots. Earth really is an amazing balance of numerous astronomical phenoms for us to exist here. (at least, in the current form). if we were further, we'd probably have alligator-like skin to keep us warm....or if we were closer, we'd all be living in modern-day australia. |

I totally get what you're saying. It's like if you were using Safari on Apple OS 9, you'd be further, but if you were using Chrome on Windows Vista, you'd be a lot closer. But right now, you've got that perfect balance.

Couldn't agree more. I did hear a pretty cool quote once that went something like, "The Universe created life in order to know itself." Carl Sagan maybe? Can't remember; too lazy to google. |
Yes, the actual quote from Sagan is "We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself." |

I don't know about you guys, but if it turns out to be that they will announce Dr.Wolfe-Simon's findings of arsenic based life forms in Mono Lake, I find this almost as exciting and fascinating as the finding of life outside Earth.
It means many things to many different fields including biology, astrobiology, philosophy, religion, etc, etc, etc. |
