It's funny because I just started watching Boardwalk Empire last night and I was thinking, America was ass backwards back during prohibition, lucky for them they had good old Canadian whisky runners providing sweet liquid gold for them :p . Thank ing god there are no rules like that in North America anymore and we don't live in an ass backward country like some of the Loony Farm's in the Middle East.

Too bad we live in Ontario

All the stadia will be temperature-controlled. Come on guys, how ing difficult is it to do a Google search for 'Qatar World Cup bid'? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar_...A_World_Cup_bid

Seriously, how stupid must you be if you thought that Qatar could have won the bid without fans being able to drink? You cleary know nothing about the World Cup. Anyway, the country already allows the consumption of alcohol in certain hotels and bars, under permit; it is illegal to be drunk and disorderly in public, as well as to drink booze in public; lastly, the government is the only importer and retailer of alcohol. Therefore, exactly how repressive are the dinking laws? Well, about as liberal as Canada's!!! Also, as is the case for big events in Canada, permits will be issued for the sale of alcohol in fan-zones.

Just like with one-party states in Russia and China (excellent hosts of the recent Olympics), one thing that you can guarantee is that decisive action will be taken to ensure that everything gets completed on time, and that the tournament is well-organised.

Now that I think about it, I am actually starting to warm to the idea of Qatar being a host, at least in one sence: if nothing else, it will help dispel the racist myth that Middle Eastern folk are subhuman terrorists who all get off on watching people get stoned to death.

did anyone catch the speech given by russian minister of sport, i almost died, the reason this is hilarious is because he does not speak a word in english and was given a translated version of what to say in russian language.

Huh?

Ummmmm yea, I think you are taking it a step too far.

The only place you can buy liquor from in Qatar is from a hotel, restaurant or a nightclub which must be drunk on the premises. Let me add that you will pay a major premium on this.

Wait sorry my bad I forgot I can get myself one of those alcohol permits that you mentioned.

quote:

To obtain an alcohol permit you need a letter from your employer written in English. This must be signed and stamped by an authorised person in your company and be addressed to the Qatar Distribution Company. It must state the applicant’s position, basic salary (must be above 4000 riyals or 1100 dollars, and the letter must use the word basic), state if an accommodation entitlement is received or if the applicant receives free accommodation and whether the applicant is married. The applicant must also provide their ID/passport and residence permit (photocopies are acceptable) and a 1000 riyal (275 dollar) returnable deposit. You also have to complete an application form, and state your religion.

Yeah I can totally forsee the morality police handing these out hand over fist during the World Cup so tourists can buy alcohol from the one alcohol store in Doha :o

It's ok though, I can still bring alcohol with me on the plane so I can have a supply of liquor in my hotel room. Nope, again that is a punishable offence.

Oh wait, sorry they will have designated "fan zones" where you can go to purchase alcohol. Yeah that sounds great, I can drink in some boring ing tent like a caged animal while it's 40-50 degrees outside.

Which leads me to this; the tiest part of this alcohol related portion of the Qatar World Cup, and the part from which I can tell that you have never been to an event of this scale and nature before is that half the fun of being able to go to something like this is being able to soak up the ATMOSPHERE!!! You know, go out and walk the streets drinking whilst mangled with a sea of people while chanting and singing the songs of the country you are there to support. Trust me on this, this is as much if not more fun then going to the actual games themselves, and having the World Cup in Qatar kills this.

What atmosphere if any will you be soaking up while it's sweltering outside to the point where no one even wants to be outside / you can't drink or appear to be intoxicated / or have a drink in your hand unless you are in some ing 5 star hotel or in some "supervised" tent.

Ummmmmmmm yea no thanks.

And another thing if I go somewhere where it's 40-50 degrees outside it would be nice if my wife / gf / daughter / sister / any girl doesn't have to worry about dressing "properly" ie. has to cover her shoulders / can't wear a skirt for fear of reprucussions from some whack morality police.

The more I think about it ... this is going to SUCK for the FANS that like to get down and PARTY, which at the end of the day imo is what going to an event like this is all about!!! And that is why, like I said earlier in the thread, this will be another soulless World Cup much like South Africa was.

:haha: What the hell are you on about, 'taking it too far'? You are the one who is clearly getting hysterical at my attempt to alleviate what I considered to be a legitimate concern. What's up, did I touch a raw nerve, as you wanted everyone to continue believing that Middle Eastern folk are subhuman terrorists who all get off on watching people get stoned to death? Your response speaks volumes, as rather than being reassured that alcohol will be readily available, you went on to continue your diatribe by objecting to the price that may have to be paid (by the way, where is your evidence?), which makes me think that you have some other agenda.

People raised the understandable concern about alcohol availability in a Muslim country, and I have repsonded with some cold, hard facts to address their concerns, including how the government's issuance of permits for the sale of alcohol is no different from the laws in Canada. Moreover, no country would be stupid enough to not make their guests feel welcome, when the rest of the world is watching - so of course the World Cup drinking culture will be accommodated. Also, of course these fan-zones are going to be out in the open, where people can quench their thirsts whilst watching the action on a big screen...have you ever seen other World Cups!?

Since the World Cup is a place where people of different backgrounds try to put the unwarranted bitching to one side, just for once, and try to get along and rejoice in their common humanity, it is just as well that you are not going ;)

First of all you were the one that was equating their laws to Canada saying that they are as "liberal as Canada's" not me. I pointed out to you with specific examples on how their laws with regards to this are not as similar as you make them out to be. You're response? I have some sort of a hidden agenda for whatever it is that you are babbling on about because I refuted that which you were alluding too.

:stongue:

Nice one.

Anyways ... here is my suggestion to you:

Go to any of the following ...

Poland / Ukraine 2012 ... Brazil 2014 ... France 2016 .... Russia 2018 and come back and tell me how amazing Qatar was. Seriously.

:haha:
