Mayor of London Boris Johnson cancels Fifa hotel stay

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-11921692

Boris Johnson has withdrawn the offer of a free stay in London's exclusive Dorchester hotel for Fifa executives during the 2012 Olympics.

The Mayor of London had offered the free accommodation for Fifa president Sepp Blatter and his team.

But after Fifa's decision on Thursday's 2018 World Cup vote - which saw the England bid get just two votes out of a possible 22 - the offer was rescinded.

Russia was chosen to host the tournament instead.

Free hotel rooms for VIP guests are handed out by Locog, the Olympic organising committee.

Mr Johnson is understood to have discussed the issue with Locog chairman Sebastian Coe.

The mayor has not commented on the decision to cancel the free stay.

But in the aftermath of the defeat, Mr Johnson, who travelled to Zurich to personally lobby Fifa's executives, said the result was a "big blow and tremendously disappointing".

He added: "We put together a cracking bid, our technical specification was top-notch and our stadiums would have been packed to the rafters."
'Exceptional grace'

A senior government source has told the BBC that at least five executive committee members "personally assured" Prince William and David Beckham they would vote for the England bid, only to back other contenders in the first round.

The Dorchester's website says the hotel "offers rooms of exceptional grace and comfort, all providing views over Hyde Park or the hotel's landscaped terraces".

It continues: "Bathrooms are welcoming and spacious, offering an exceptional combination of style and function, and are said to have the deepest baths in London.

"They are predominantly made in Italian marble and designed in the classic art deco style - echoing the hotel's 1930s origins."

Good posts Potter

Regarding Qatar in 2022. I'm sure you'l be able to do what ever the you want during the scheduled time of the games as the country is slowly becoming more liberal and more importantly, (and i'm assuming) many temporary rules/exceptions will be made for the cup. Arabic countries just like any others will bend over backwards to "impress" the world whist playing host to such a global event. I cannot see Quatar winning the bid let alone being a contender if such things were not considered.

I heard/read some things about substantial investment on behalf of the government in renewable energy sources for the games, alongside a strict diet of environmentally friendly construction techniques amongst other things. Sounds good but i'm worried it is nothing more than the usual vague promise to insure bid acquisition. Also, Qatar is just too small. I think they will see a serious inflationary effect as per their costs because they literally have to build every last thing to support a serious increase then decrease in population and density.

Why do I think the people living in Qatar, or rather Doha, are going to have a ty time? But hey it is more than ten years away, a lot can happen.

I am not going to get into the debate of this. I will just say that there's a chance that England will not host a world cup in my lifetime. That in itself is heartbreaking for me.

As a football lover for the whole of my life, I cannot understand why, the country that created the game, should be denied the opportunity to host the greatest competition in the world.

They can say that it is because of the hooliganism but trust me, those that want trouble will go and find it, no matter what country the cup is held in.

Anyway. Like I said. Heartbroken.

Brazil starting in a few days ... Who knows how that will even end up and play itself out.

But with fresh new allegations against Qatar I'm curious to know if anyone still supports the farce (on so many levels) that is Qatar 2022.

Re-vote please. How about having it in a country that is not ass-backwards?

Agreed. I think it's going to happen. The suggestion of having it in the winter is just ludicrous, It would impact every single league globally. And it's not like the hockey olympics where they can take a week break.

I love all of the politics behind this. England gets jammed and they start digging up all of the bs in fifa / uefa for all to see bahaha

Good for them.

platini and blatter, can't stand either of them.

Fifa has been really impressed with Canada. We broke I think maybe an attendence record for the under 18 World Cup. And we are hosting the 2015 womens World Cup.

Its very possible Fifa will favour Canada over the US and Mexico... i thought I read an article some time ago saying how its possible Canada and the US can host it jointly...

By my count we got 8 decent stadiums across Canada... Brazil has 12 for this years world cup... Fifa was willing to work with South Africa, Korea/Japan, and is working with Brazil and Qater with building new stadiums so I dont see why they wont help us out....
