what about garage djs'.. lol

I learned my lesson long long time ago and that's that. Either ask the headliner if its in their set or stay away from current anthem tracks. I like to dig from years past and bring in a classic or two, even if it was a cheese track from way back when it will work as long as you stay away from the current top 100 from the past 2 years. Also, something that helps me in choosing tracks is not playing anything of the tracks that he/she has remixed.

I have to throw in a bit of the business perspective. I have seen quite a few times that the party lost momentum by the time the headliner came on; the dance floor got empty shortly after the headliner started to play. As a result, on a slower night, the owner and promoter have an interest on banging it out early, so that more people will stay for the party. It is lame musically, but often you have to do what you have to do, in order to keep the party go on.

true and also another problemis they think buy banging it all out at 10pm they are impressing , the promoter, the headlining dj, etc , but they dont realize they are hurting themselves and disrespecting the main act , and for gods sake WHEN WILL DUTCH GARBAGE MUSIC die out lol had to add that in there

I feel like my job as an opening dj is to get ppl on the dance floor, and to set up the headliner to light the club on fire. my experience is here in sacramento though, where we have to work our asses off to get ppls interest. sf, la, and other places, ppl show up already educated on the music, here we are trying to educate.

oh boy does this happen way to often. Openers thinking they are going to drop a set that will catapult their career into a global superstar dj. Far to few djs understand the concept of musical progression, and their place in the structure of a successful clubnight.

I kind of like it when an opening dj plays a track from the headliner though. I'm not talking about a current hit or any track that the headliner would most likely play himself, but rather something a bit more dated, maybe a bit obscure, and that fits nicely with the progression of their (the openers) set.
i think it's a nice way of paying respect/homage....maybe i'm totally off base here.

Then find better openers and then establish those openers. An opener is supposed to warm up the crowd, get the vibe going. Maybe the dance floor gets empty because the opener choices are terrible and don't build up the energy well. Maybe they just don't know about proper progression. Most established promoters keep the openers within a select few people for key nights, because those DJs know what to do. Except Avalon, which is why they notoriously have horrible openers :-p. That said, they are more selective with the openers on the big headliners.

The worst is when an opener bangs it out too hard and then the headliner comes on, and brings it way down from the beginning because that's the headliner's style. That murders the energy in a room until the headliner basically builds it back up again. When a headliner has to do that and the energy dies because of it, that's the openers fault
