Theories on the Popular Act of "Hating" Trance

What are yours?
This is just MHO, but I think it's because Trance is easy to like. The first time most people hear a good Trance track, they like it right away. Techno, jungle, and some types of House take a lot more "getting used to" for a lot of people.
Things that are more "acquired" tastes seem to gain a lot more respect on the whole. People think that having an acquired taste for something makes them elite... that you need "brains" to be able to enjoy something that needs to be "acquired". By rejecting a genre that is "easy" to like like Trance, some feel they can reaffirm their self-appointed role as an "elite" music listener.
Trance is as complex, if not more, than any other type of electronica.
When the truth is, they really love Trance and they're in denial! "Oh no, if I admit I like Trance, people will think I know nothing about the scene! That I'm a newbie and not jaded enough."
Yep, that's it, they're in denial :D
It's like how some of the most homophobic people turn out in the end to be gay (it's true!).
Then again, this is just another one of my talk-out-of-my-ass-rationalizations to try to get me to comprehend how anyone could hate Trance...
Blah, I'm not gonna try to MAKE anyone like Trance... I just wish that if people hated it so much, they wouldn't have to put so much effort into bashing it. To each their own right?
I LOVE TRANCE. I like it hard, I like it lined with 303s, I like it progressive, I like it Techy, I like it Psi and Goa, I like it dark, Epic, and of course, I like it melodic and cheesy.
If the degree to which someone likes Trance is supposed to be inversely proportional to their intelligence and class, then I should star on Jerry Springer. <-- lame joke, forgive me I need sleep! |

| people are just afraid of opening their minds, eyes whatever. and thats just something trance does to ya. also trance can make you like it without giving you a choice. people i guess are afraid of that too:) damn if they only knew the feelings that can come along with it:) |

| some people just get bored of the simple patterns most trance tracks follow and switch to some more creative styles ... |

A LOT of people think Trance is defined as only the cheesy, uplifting tunes -- and not the bangin, bass pounding tracks that are out there...
Chiclet I know you're on tribe alot so you know how that place is 80% house lovers who bash trance any chance they get..
They can hate it all they want, doesn't bother me.
It's just like "raving" - the ones that have been doing it since the mid 90s or so feel they're too "good" for everyone else now because they're so "old-school"... please..whatever.. The majority of "ravers" think they're so 'different' and 'accepting' of everyone -- but if you don't dress like them then they don't feel you're part of their 'group'.
I know... about a year ago I was walking into certain shops on Queen st dressed more 'raverish' and it was all cool.. a few weeks later I came back dressed more preppy and all I got was looks...
hilarious.. :D |

| hehehe. your right about that. people do tend to start disliking things when a bunch of other people do. they think theyre better than the rest for some reason. that theyre too good to listen to what more and more peeps are listening to. than they get bitter cause because of their pride theyre now missing out on something they know they like and they have to see other people enjoying it. oh well they know theyre suffering inside while were out getting that feeeeeellllliiiiinnnnn!!! ahhhhhhhhhhh! |

| my only real objection is "Bullet in the gun - Planet Perfecto [any effin mix already]" because that song is absolutely . |

a lot of people who 'hate' trance..
either have their own taste.. or are ignorant in their own right..
planet perfecto - bullet in the gun.. fair enough.. its a tad cheesy..
assume that u've never heard it in ur life..
u heard it for the 1st time, i highly doubt that many of u would say that it sucks.....
commercial variability and exposure may lead to hating of trance..... but a lot of times.. its just ppl who have notihng else better to hate =p hehe |

Fact is all of these ppl who bash trance are only hearing the commercial bollocks thats pumped out by your average radio station/chart program, and that is pants trance (ooh a rhyme) so all these trance bashers prolly havent heard the real .. They think trance is Alice Deejay, or something similar..
Another thing ppl dont like, and seem to completely stereotype trance with is its links to the drug world. They think, ooh ravers, ooh clubbers, they are all pill-headz, baaaaad... best not listen to that music else ill be one. Its like, OFF, that is so annoying. Yeah there is a strong link between trance and drugs, but u dont have to be pilled up to enjoy it at all.
There are certain types of trance which are definatly an aquied taste.. progressive being the main one. These ppl that have never heard proper trance just dont know how to listen, no ill re-phrase that, hear the music.. i think most of u know what i mean by that. You tend to hear a lot deeper into the music when u have liked trance for a while and have learnt how to truly appreciate it :) All a trance hater hears is the same loop over and over... the trance lover hears all the little wacks, dinks and tches in the background.. and a trance tune takes the trance lover on a journey, whereas it takes a trance hater to bed, because they dont know how to open theirselves to it properly.

Wicked posts guys ;)
Trance was the latest "big thing" in mainstream pop culture. The electronica scene, still trying to grasp on to it's 'subversive', 'underground' mentality likes to reject things that are popular. *NEWS FLASH* there's nothing 'undreground' about the rave scene anymore except the signs they use to sell our music in HMV.
People have this Alice Deejay stereotype in their mind about ALL Trance (not that there's anything wrong with ADJ). The term Trance is very general now anyways, it can mean anything. It's gotten to have this negative stigma of "the backstreet boys of electronica".
I'm sure if we showed some hard, progressive Trance to some newly 'jaded' Techno snob and didn't tell him/her it was Trance, they would actually like it. |

tu_face , infinity i agree 110% with both of you.
I just recently let a couple of my spanish friends in this awesome music we call trance. They needed a few listens, but now they are addicted just like me, and these are guys that never listened to anything else but spanish music. Now they are asking me if I got the new Tiesto Mix. I think that is awesome. It goes to show if you leave yourself a little room to let yourself really listen to trance, you will get addicted. So let the newbies in. Don't fault them for liking what you call cheese. You were a newbie once too.
P.S.
I still like Bullet In The Gun so I guess I'm cheese.
Ow, Is that a mouse nibbling on my ass? |

chiclet, you can bet your ass there's still underground rave culture ... the thing is people only see the commercial part of it and assume that that's all there is to it, but it's rather only the tip of the iceberg ...
and why do people keep insisting that everybody MUST like trance no matter what ... some types of music just don't appeal to certain peeps. I'll admit I'm just being devil's advocate a little but hey, when I look at some of your posts I really wonder how closed-minded you people are for not acknowledging other types of electronic music. |
