Mad for Brad
it is really only when white people play it that the wank gets out of control. WHite people tend to look incredibly stupid when they play.

the wooten brothers.

Kenny Rogers
i knew it would show up lol
Lucidity
They're all awesome except the white dude on the guitar, lol. Seriously though, its not like I would cruise in my car and jam to these tracks, but, I admire most of their skills.

He is very good, but kind a get a feeling he is only trying to impress with speed, scales,, seems he was good practicing Hanon exercises, not much heart imo
Mad for Brad
I did the hanon book for years. Still a decade later , I can remember all the exercises by heart.

Fully with Mad for Brad on this one. It amazes me how many piano players and videos I see where people are playing the piano FAST AS , but just sound like utter garbage. There's no touch, no soul, to their playing. And everyone fawns over them in their commentary, saying how amazing they are. I just don't get it. There's so much more to the piano than playing notes quickly. All you are proving is that you have good muscle memory. The Asian girl above... now THAT's how you play fast.

I find myself frequently disappointed in piano pieces because they are played so cold and mechanically. This instrument lends itself so well to expression, and yet the amount of times you see it played robotically starts to make you wonder why they even play an instrument which requires such dedication. I suppose that's what taking 10 years of piano lessons will do to your perception, though.

My favorite piano piece is Mendelssohn's Scherzo in Em (Opus 16 no. 2), but I can never, ever, find a recording of it that I'm happy with. I got spoiled by the person whom I used to hear play it... a student of the same teacher I had. He played it just a bit slower than most recordings I've ever heard of it, but it was both technically flawless, and ridiculously expressive. When he played that song, he made my teacher's baby grand piano his BITCH. Quiet when necessary, crescendo when necessary, without sounding like he's doing it because he was "supposed" to... and in one particular fortissimo moment, I would see that piano literally shake because he was playing it with so much power. None of this bumbly-stumbly (but FAST) BS I always see pop up everywhere.

Unfortunately, I'm not a very good technical player or reader... but I AM a very expressive one. So, I tend to do a lot of random improv and playing by ear with no real direction. Ah well, we all have our strong and weak points I suppose.

I used to be all about chops but ya there comes a point where you start getting rediculous.

A chopin recording of mine. It is actually harder to play slow and well although there are some virtuosic parts in the middle.

Will have to listen at home... can't get to zshare in the office, unfortunately.

Also, just found this YouTube clip of the song I mention above.... it's not played exactly how I like but it's probably the closest I've found to hearing it the way I like. There is a slight mistake or two but the tempo is right and there's at least some dynamics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKUrtywXamM

zshare doesnt work here either.
