Can't make up my mind about the new Deadmau5 album (pg. 7)

@ Seandroid - if you don't know what '8th notes' means in reference to deadmau5, you haven't been around long enough to gauge this guy's talent. for the most part, it's not strained. He's in his 20s now, but hes been producing for prolly around 10 years. Long enough to make farty basslines with ease.

this negative marketing is amazing tho. we prolly generate more deadmaufive fans through the hate than through whatever fans he has flooding forums.

I know exactly what that means, lol, I have a lot of "8th note" deadmau5 tracks. I've been a fan of deadmau5 for more than 3 years now, I know that most of his proggy tracks sound similar, but what I meant by that was the fact that Joel jumps genres like crazy, and his electro tracks, farty bass lines or not, generally vary quite a bit. IE Cthulu Sleeps, FML and Some Chords have next to nothing in common.

@Mr.Mystery I know where you're coming from. Though whereas you feel I only think Deadmau5 is talented because I like him, I don't think that's true at all. For instance Opera music makes me want to shoot small children but I'll be damned if those songstresses don't have talent. Celine Dion drives me up the wall but the woman can sing my face off. I understand what you mean though, and we'll just have to agree to disagree there. :)

And how isn't the poop farty bassline not a reason for "hating" him? You stating that his poop fart bassline is awesome is the exact same. Some people here have listened to edm longer than you've lived, and know when a fart just doesn't cut it as a bassline.

I generally do like him

You're calling him by his real name, does that mean you can't think of him as an artist, that you're attached to the person, instead? You liking him generally really proves you're biased.

I hate him in person, I hate his voice, his attitude in general, he's pompous, and hangs out with Tommy Lee. I guess I'm kind of biased too.

I may not like some of his tracks, but I can definitely respect his relentlessness when it comes to writing music after all these years. The "deadmau5 sound" might have lost its luster to a lot of members on the board, but he's created a fairly recognizable sonic palette for the brand. I'm sure he would like to release something other than the typical electro house track people expect from him. But at the end of the day, though, deadmau5 is what pays the bills. Who knows what he writes in his free time.

I also enjoy what he does with his UStream/stickcam account (just watching him work in his studio). I can't think of many major artists these days who turn on a camera and allow a bunch of anonymous users to witness their flubs and breakthroughs. I spend most of my free time with synthesizers, so its nice to see other gear heads work with synths I know I won't be able to afford in my lifetime.

I like Some Chords and Animal Rights.

You're embarrassing yourself by posting things like this. It shows your ignorance of the range of electronic music available, and thus your inexperience as a whole. Joel does not 'jump genres like crazy'. In fact, he does the complete opposite. He produces a very narrow-minded selection of music.

If you'd ever produced anything yourself, you'd understand why other producers (such as Mr. Mystery) don't see deadmau5 as talented. I've only fiddled with a bit of software and one hardware synth that I bought, and even I can understand.

Way to put words in my mouth. I called him Joel because that's his name, it has nothing to do with me being some sort of obsessive fan with no opinion.

And I never said anyone had to like the 'fart' basslines, I just said they were solidly designed, and considering this is a trance forum, a lot of the people on this website only seem to like 8th note with an upward ramp LFO filtered bass lines with a sidechain.

Been producing for more than a year now good sir. Click the link in my signature.

And it does not show my ignorance of anything, I said he jumps genres like crazy, in that his albums are never JUST progressive house or JUST electro house. He jumps between what he feels like producing all the time, sometimes progressive, sometimes electro, and sometimes dubstep, not that he's done a million genres.

the true test of mr mau5's talent is if he can produce nice sounding glitch music.

Completely false. Regardless of how good you think his stuff is, it still doesn't change the fact that he's made electro-house, tech-house, his version of prog-house, ambient, IDM, dubstep, and some glitch in his early days. He might produce a lot of the same stuff now, but to say he produces a small range of music is simply not factual (and it's not like the talent debate, this is something completely objective).

Agreed, he may not release it but Deadmau5 has ambient tracks like Creep, and all the "Songs for Meowingtons" stuff on YouTube, his first album Get Scraped was all IDM and ambient, his early stuff was tech house for the most part and that eventually developed into his progressive tracks like Arguru, then came along his tracks like The Reward is More Cheese which is electro house, and now he's doing dubstep like One Trick Pony/Raise Your Weapon

Faxing Berlin is debatably trance too.

Even though that's not what I meant by genre hopping Deadmau5 has tracks in tonnes of genres as well.

I can't help but wonder if we're over-analyzing what is ultimately designed to be fun big-room dance music. Personally, I like about half of the new album, but really who cares? When you strip away all the hype, marketing, and arenas, Deadmau5 is just another guy putting out some solid . He embraced a theatrical, showman element with the mouse-head, backed it up with some bangin tunes, caught lightning in a bottle, and now finds himself at the top of the game. There will always be guys crossing over into the mainstream who annoy some of us, so what's the big deal?
