NYE in NYC - need party suggestions!

So it looks like I'll be spending NYE in NYC - and I need help from all you locals in finding a fun place to celebrate - the only requirements are a decent venue thats not crazily packed, great music and reasonably priced drinks/open bar. I'll be coming in with a group of friends - they don't appreciate techno or prog, so neither D36 nor Sullivan Room are options.
Any thoughts? One of my friends is inclined to go to one of those open-bar parties with TOP40s music - but I have no experience with those, nor do I know any of the venues, so I don't know what to expect.
Any ideas people?
PS: We're looking to spend under $100/person. Given our budget, Roseland seems like a terrible value... and IMO Steve Angello isn't worth shelling out the extra bucks. |

| It's NYE. In NYC no less. Get ready to get ass raped by $100 cover charges and $20 drinks with DJ no-name and DJ no-talent spinning your favorite radio hits until the ungodly hour of 4am. |

These requirements do not typically exist on NYE. If you are willing to compromise on those requirements, we could probably help you further.
Even most "Regular" bars have ticketed events where you drop $100 for open bar, those are often the best deals :) |

| $100 will be manageable. But we're trying not to push it too much beyond that...we're all broke grad students |

Almost ever bar in NYC will have some sort of NYE ticket or a open bar party special. You should except most of them be crowded with people and expect to spend at least $100 a person.
Roseland isn't a bad venue in terms of sound and space. My only complaint would be the overcrowded bathrooms and a line to go out if you're a smoker. |

Stay away from Midtown to avoid crowds, and Meatpacking for insane prices.
We go to bars and lounges in Soho, Tribeca, or Upper West/East Sides. Those neighborhoods are the best bet.
Buy pre-tix for open bar and champagne, and call it a night. Those are the best times and the least aggressive when it comes to overcrowding ;) |

We are playing at Cielo on New Year's Eve with Willie Graff and tickets are $50.
It's not going to be top 40 music but it'll be fun and the crowd at Cielo is pretty cool.
Let me know if you're interested in that. |

They should put those portable bathrooms outside Roseland because those bathrooms will be clogged/flooded by the time Angello party is over. |
