[Disclaimer]Yes, I realize I'm an ignorant dumb American, so don’t flame me, this is just a good natured thread and isn’t intended as an attack on you brits.[/Disclaimer]

I've got a couple of friends who are brits and half the time I cant understanding what the heck they're saying.

1. Do they actually teach you in school to speak that way or is it just slang?

2. How come I can understand Hugh Grant? Is this cause he's Americanized?

3. How did you go from speaking like Shakespeare to this?

These are all the dumb questions I can think of now...
:-)

aye, these brits make me head hurt with their bloody talk.:tongue2

btw, i think their going from shakespeare to this is a very big improvement!;) :D

Its usually slang, as about 2% of the UK properly speak that posh gits English, and about a further 20% try to lol.

Hugh Grant speaks the posh English RP its called better know as the queens English.

haha I'd rather speak common as English which I do anyway since coming from a Working Class (blue collar) area, having a lot of family from Ireland to just chucks a couple of more slang words into it, I rather speak as common as e, then speak like Shakespheare, ye olde English. :)

LOL

This is more an observation than a question, brit rock n rollers sing with out an english accent, but during an interview u can barely understand a word.

Here's another question:

For anyone who watches the Osbournes who's british can you understand his lingo? Or has he made up his own language like Keith Richards or Bob Dylan, a sort Esparanto. hehehe

Good thing they got subtitles for us yankees. Funny show!

I'll take a british accent over a southern US one any day.
I still reckon english speaking South Africans have got it the clearest :p

Its because he's from Birmingham he's got a Brummie accent which can be quite hard to understand, also if u done as many drinks and drugs as Ozzy you probably would have slurred speech too. Same goe's for Keith Richards.

btw theres probably around 50 accents in the UK.

We Dutch start learning English at the age of 2 from cartoons. Everything is subtitled.

When coming out of kindergarden, Dutch children already speak better English than most college students from countires like Germany (where they don't subtitle but use native voices)

Getting into highschool the problem starts: Slang learned from TV against the proper English education...

Indeed it's hard to speak proper English. Especially Dutch people use both UK-English and USA-English mixed: lift/elevator for example...

ah shut ya trap all on ya yal have no ditsy wots u on bout!

hehehehe.... there's the queens language!

Is it true that everyone in America loves "The Naked Chief"?

I have friends (females ones :D ) and they say they love the english accent...so i give a rats arse if the lads don't like it, if the females dig it...:tongue2 thats all that matters!;)
