Curious question: How do you stay updated and current with releases?

I used to dld tons of torrents and mark in a txt file which releases I liked based on a short sampling. It was really stressful and never got around to enjoying a lot of music.
Now I just do my 'once a month' thing and sift through pages on Beatport/Juno, check out the Top 100, pick up on the Breaks page where I last left off now, etc. I probably have CTS after all the clicking I do.
So, I was wondering what you guys did. Do you find yourself sifting through many pages a day to find the newest tunes? Or do some of you just rely on artist albums and compilations? I'm really close to giving up on trying to stay current and simply rely on CD releases instead. I know it's superficial, but I've always been on this quest to find my own self the 'perfect' tune. I'd hate to miss out on anything. *sigh* |

I've got a whole bunch of methods. I've got Beatport set up quite nicely now so I don't have to sift - it'll tell me whenever an artist or label I care about has released something new. However, every week or two I will go trawling anyway, which can be anything from sifting randomly through a genre to following artists and labels endlessly until something interesting comes up, or even just typing a word into the track search and seeing what comes up. And of course, if I do find an interesting artist or label I'll tell Beatport to keep me updated. The whole process propagates more and more new directions and possibilities.
There's a whole bunch of other stuff, too: I read a few different music sites to see what's being talked about. I sometimes just follow Youtube's related videos. I listen to what Last.fm has recommended me. I talk to my friends. And TA, of course, plays a big role in it. Whether it's downloading mixes from DJ Promotion or reading threads, I get a huge amount of recommendations from here. |

How much time would you say is invested in checking out other music, SYSTEM-J? A few days a week? Everyday perhaps? I'm asking so I don't feel too guilty about it all.
I also keep a few artists saved in the "My Beatport" sidebar, but the annoying this is, there's always going to be a new artist springing up while the old artists hardly produce anything new. Still, it's a nifty feature at least. |

| i usually d/l sets from djs i like and know that play upfront promos. i have huge list of tracks i need to get and search for them at least once a month. facebook and twitter are also good for keeping up to date with labels and artists. finally, 0day sites are a great help with current releases. i found tons of tracks from artists i like that i never would have known about unless i saw them listed on the 0day site. |

I don't set aside time for checking out music, it just happens. Like I'll hear a track that might inspire me to start a DJ mix, and I'll spend all week searching for more tracks for that mix. Other times I'll be busy with other things and not really check out any new music.
Whether it's new or old music, though, I always have to hear something different. I'm always looking for music I haven't heard before. |

What's your last.fm anyways?
Honestly if you have enough time and money Beatport is all you need. Track all the labels you need and go through the back catalogue if needed.
Depending on genre reading websites/forums can be pretty good in addition to that. For example, if you lurk Dubstepforum a lot, your gonna know everything about all the new coming out in Dubstep.
I don't think going through the top 100 or everything in one genre charts is worth it, id rather search for new labels and track them if theyre good. |

And I disagree that Beatport is "all you need". There's a huge amount of electronic/dance music not on Beatport. |

| I use dj charts of people who have similar taste, I check youtube occasionally for 'recommended videos' and sometimes find something good, but just hours spend trawling radio shows, podcasts and then the digi-download sites and websites that review tunes too. |

| I must also mention how much I'm loving Spotify at the moment. If someone mentions an artist or an album that sounds interesting you can probably hear the whole thing straight away on there. |
