I've never understood these type of long open ended engagements. In my mind when you are ready to get married in the coming year you get engaged. It be like making a restaurant reservation for 5-10 years or maybe never. Can that really be considered a reservation? To me its more like here is an unofficial wedding ring and we'll get around to ceremony and paperwork later. If you don't believe in marriage thats fine but playing it half way seems a little hypocritical. |
Sure, but the other side to that argument is "What's the rush?"
I asked her to marry me, and she said yes. It's a sign of commitment. The wedding itself is nothing more than a ceremony, IMO. It makes no difference whatsoever to being committed to each other. |

I like to think of myself as a grown ass-man. |

I was commenting on my irritation with the general trend of stretching the engagement out so long it loses its original meaning. Your explanation of your situation makes sense. Its fine by me if your not in a rush to get married. Not as if you need my blessing. |

The original meaning is commitment though. Five years, ten years, it doesn't (or shouldn't) make a difference.
Stop being old fashioned :p |
