| They belittle themselves by attacking innocent people. By absurd acts of irrational violence, they have by and large alienated a great majority of reasonable people who want the same things they do, but aren't willing to recklessly murder others in hopes that their message becomes... what? Clearer? Louder? The frustrated minorities that comprise terrorist networks have damned themselves into being nothing more than a fear-fed nuisance that shall never, ever accomplish their aims because they aren't willing to use methods that paint them as anything but the very hypocrites they seek to depose. |

What other option do they have when peaceful means fail along all avenues? Especially when their country has been destroyed by an enemy they can't hope to resist with conventional means. I would be skeptical of anyone who said terrorism never works. For those who fight against an enemy exponentially more powerful than they, it is their only means of attack. As cold-blooded as it sounds. Civilians are just where it hurts. It's far easier and gets more attention than if they attacked a military unit. Even more profound is a comparison to civilians killed in Chechnya compared to Russia. I'd be willing to bet Chechnya has seen far more civilian casualties than Russia ever has. So what are we really talking about here? I personally think, state-sponsored terror is more of a threat than insurgent terrorism. From my point of view, insurgent activity is often fueled by state terrorism. What reason would the Chechens have in attacking Russia if the Russians just left them alone???? |

Surely you must concede that concentrating larger numbers of people at predictable locations inside of airports is the key to preventing large numbers of civilians from being bombed in airports. |

This is misguided. You assume those conducting such activities are simply a peaceful people lashing out because they won't be left alone. Their whole goal of the fundamentalists is the imposition of Islam on everyone else by any means necessary. For example, and I don't want to turn this into a Jew/Arab thing, but do you think if Israel was cut in half and a Palestinian state was officially created, Hamas would drop their guns, shake hands with Israelis, and be like, "Welp... mission accomplished. This is what we wanted and now it's time to mind our own business."? |

Probably not, seeing that all of Israel was theirs before the Jewish state was created... They have a legitimate grievance. You also have to remember that until the late 80s the movement was not even a religious one and had far more ties to the leftist/nationalist movements of Europe than it did to the radical religious movements found in the Arab states that had been growing their on their own accord (and then found the issue of Palestine a good rallying call, just like the same governments THEY had been revolting against for years had). |
