Yeah?
I only point this out because I quite vividly remember a scuba diving trip on the coast of Maui, there were various couples of Asian tourists and I recall seeing a (rather pretty) pale Asian girl stretching out and thinking to myself, "Cat-piss & porcupines - she's yellow!"
Obviously she wasn't anywhere near Marge Simpson status, but it was a revolutionary moment in my life nevertheless. I logged it in my Plenty-of-Pets diary. :o |

Yeah this is what pisses me off. According to him and every soap opera website he's Black. Sorry but he doesn't look Black. I got yelled at on another forum site because I pointed this out. I don't get it. Are people STILL counting Octaroon's as "Black." I mean, forget that your mom is full white and your dad is half white half black, you're still Black. WTF?!? This method of classification is outdated and useless. "Black" is not a dominant genetic trait. The pics of that guy in the OP is mulatto at best, but I will never call him Black. Egyptian maybe. |
I think your thought of what black looks like is narrow, we come in all different shades with different features. Just look at the picture below of the President of the NAACP who has one white parent and one black parent. Anyhow by looking at that actor as a whole I don't see him as being anything other than half black, not 1/8th he actually looks like Boris Kudjoe. The only half who tricks me is Cash Warren, Jessica Alba's husband.
As for Egyptian, he doesn't even remotely look like he's part Middle Eastern/African why try to marginalize how he identifies himself? Do you know for a fact he's 1/8th black? I think people should be proud of both sides of their families but you are obviously going to identify with the side that you are closest to and the side that people perceive you to be.

Asians aren't called yellow because of their skin. Turkish peoples called Hindus yellow (and they're called brown now, so it's unlikely that it had anything to do with the skin colour of either group), and there are theories that Europeans called the Chinese "yellow" because they're docile - hence cowards [1] - and I even heard rumours that it could have something to do with Chinese clothing because when Europeans arrived near the Yellow river, they noticed their clothes were "yellowish"... upon further investigation, they learnt that it was because of the river (for this hypothesis, however, I've got no linkable evidence).
No sane person ever in history claimed that a whole group of people had yellow skin. And, really, I've been Asian people with hepatitis, and they're about as yellow as a cracker - are you sure the girl you saw didn't tan herself to a dermatological oompa loompa death? |

Heh, always nice to learn something. :D
The girl was far too pale to be considered to be tanned anything, really. I suppose that's why it's so engraved into my memory - I'd seen nothing like it.
I never claimed that Asians had yellow (although "yeller" would be more fitting, I think) skin, nor did I say that that was the consensus, misinformation or not, regarding their nature or their physical hue. I just replied to your notion of a yeller person because the yeller person I saw happened to be Asian. :p
EDIT: Given I didn't know the history of this whole yeller Asian business, I suppose I grew up with the notion of their skin physically being yeller. Yet, the slur developing from their docile nature, rivers, and/or clothing aside, my sighting of someone yeller still stands as revolutionary. :o |

Oh, sorry, I assumed you thought she was actually yellow :toothless |

Well now you're just trying to recruit anyone who has a hint of black to be black. I don't see white people saying, "Obama is half black half white so OH MY GOD HE'S WHITE." No, he's Mulatto. Not even Black. Only for the sake of simplicity and keeping Black people happy we call him the first Black president.

Why are you advocating he neglect all his background except for Black? That's oversimplifying things isn't it?

So if I identify with Black culture can I be Black then? |

In all seriousness, I don't know why people think he's Black. Or, for that matter, why people still care and cling to outdated terms like "Black", "White", "Brown", "Red" (Red!?) and "Yellow" (which happens to be my favourite, because I've never met a yellow person in my entire life).

I totally agree about the race thing being pointless. I prefer to refer to someone's phenotypical characteristics based off their "ethnic background" as I refer to it, which leaves it open ended for them to ramble off on numerous countries, which is common in LA (except for the Mexicans who are Mexicans.)
But it's important to know how to differentiate in order to possible learn more about someone's culture or be more sensitive. I mean if I'm dating a dude who is from Iran I'm not be like, "oh my god I ing Hate Muslims." I also dated a dude who told me he was some kind of Latino islander (forgot the name of the Island) which has more African influence and his religion was WAY different than the typical Mexican Catholic. So next time I meet someone like him I know their culture and know not to up around their taboos.
So ja main, I need to know the name of the style I'm sexing so that I can sex some more like that. For the same reason you learn to differentiate clothes by brand names and food by specific names. People need to be arbitrarily differentiated so that you know the right ones to when you drunk. |

i'm not trying to "recruit" anyone, if anyone is it's you. i didn't start an entire thread about his race you did, i trust he knows himself and doesn't have an identity crisis. if you know for a fact he's 1/8 then i agree it's strange for him to call himself black. most people in this country are pretty mixed but you don't check all the boxes do you? the simple answer is to say "i'm x" with x being the majority race and if given the opportunity expand upon it.
As for Obama, it's white people who forget he's half white so don't insuinate we call him the first black president to pacify black people because that's bull . How many black people do you see trying to find his birth certificate? How many black people do you see painting him with black power or lumping him in with people like reverand wright? i'm happy to see you "claim" him, as you should since his background is very representative of a diverse America, but the fact is most of the world sees him as black. i don't think it's right to ignore the side of his family that raised him but much of the world does. On that note do you have a problem with his kids calling themselves black?
also how can I advocate that whatever his name neglect all of his background when I specifically said people should be proud of both sides of their families? the overall point in all of this is you don't know his background, until you do it's pointless to say he should accept his other side maybe he doesn't have another side or maybe his non black ancestors are far removed. my nephew is pale, like everyone thinks he's half white but my sister is 100% black and her husband has one hispanic great grandparent, that kid will grow up thinking he is black, which he is, and he doesn't need someone later in life telling him he needs to claim another race without you knowing anything of his background.
as for the you being black comment, don't be dense. |
