Passport Question (pg. 2)

I believe the reasoning behind the 6 months thing is that if you happen to get stuck in a country for whatever reason, having that little wiggle room before your passport expires.

Though you can just go to any consulate/embassy and get a new passport anyways.

no but honestly it's bull if this is a rule.

the passport should be good until it expires. not 6 months before. what the is that. if they want it to expire 6 months before 5 years, then that's when the expiration should be, no?

The US writes their own rules. Well, as does every country - it's up to them who they let in and why/why not.

Instead of spending 2 days calling around to get a firm answer (because chances are that answer may not be the case when you land! the US gives border officials a HUGE amount of discretion) - just get the rush renewal done.

Why not just get the rush done? It's not like it's a hundred bucks. Better safe than sorry. Customs may let you in one time if they're nice, but reject you the next time. Why risk it? The rules may be stupid, but we don't write them.

i am not worried about the money. it's the ing time investment.

have to go get pictures, which means i need a haircut. which means trying to find a hairdresser quickly.

not counting the day you spend going downtown and to the office. it's at least two days of investment.

i don't have all day every day. lol.

it's valid most places, but some countries like Thailand will not accept them within 3/6/whatever months of expiry. Most places that don't will have issued warnings to travellers about those kinds of condition.s.

lol oh Margie, it's a passport picture. I look like a serial killer in mine. I got it really early in the morning after a very late night! Who cares?

Plus, be at the passport office right when it opens, then it will take less time.

1/2 a day instead of 2 :)

Correction.. i was most recently on a cruise and we were told that our passports had to be valid for at least 6 months. However, that might have been due to rules in some of the other countries we went to.

I just found this
http://www.consular.canada.usembass...d_questions.asp

It says for canadians, your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your trip!

hope that helps!

yeah, that's what i found too.

i will just renew it when i return. my passport is good until middle of march. i am only going for a weekend in feb.
Skipper
I wouldn't get a passport pic done with your haircut either Margs.

Just kidding darling. :)

The passport is valid, but the country you are visiting will have their own policy. Many countries state that it must be valid for 6 months on the date of entry. This is to stop people from prolonging their trip and then having the Passport expire, whether intentional or not (refugees ect).

I would just renew it, or at least check with the destination (and remember any stop over’s count too).

P.S. The rush one is actually around $90-$100 now...not $30. Although you have several options on how quick you need it, like 24 hours or like 5 days.
