I first heard the podcast from Quirks and Quarks.

You can listen here: (these podcasts are not available for long but it should still be up)

Many of us have experienced getting a chill of pleasure when listening to music. Now, research "orchestrated" by Valorie Salimpoor, a Ph.D candidate at the Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University, has shown that this chill is, in fact, due to music directly affecting our brain chemistry. The researchers looked at dopamine production and uptake while subjects listened to chill-inducing music. What they saw was that there was a burst of dopamine in response to the music. Since dopamine is the same neurotransmitter that activates the brain's reward circuitry when we eat or have sex, this suggests that the enjoyment of music might well be a deeply evolved behaviour in humans.

You can also check out the lab's page where they list the music the participants brought in. WEBSITE

The interesting thing is that Tiesto and Infected Mushroom make the list of the music that people brought in and was studied.

And cute that they called it Techno. :)

I also wonder if Barber knew he composed the single most emotion inducing piece of music written. Adagio for Strings is most amazing.

I didn't know that vomiting was an emotional response.

lol. you should listen to Adagio for Strings by Tiesto. I dare you not to get chills. It's quite nice. I mean, I can't handle trance for too long but the music composition is quite awesome. (not necessarily the sole work of Tiesto, obviously).

I'm pretty sure we can all verify this... but nice to see proper research being done :)

ferry remix > tiesto. i'm still annoyed at Tiesto trying to take sole credit for adagio. though apparently william orbit stole the idea from someone else. and junkie xl or whoever probably did most of the work on tiesto remix anyways

The Tiesto mix is awesome. It was Samuel Barber that originally composed the song nearly a century ago.

Nice to see 'Swan Lake' on the list. By far my favourite song. Still gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it.

I have. I actually prefer Barber's original. Tiesto's work on the track has little to do with the emotional response I found.

Interesting with Infected Mushroom. I used to love seeing them at Guv. Tiesto's Nyana is beautiful. I'm liking Swan Lake too, as well as Beethoven. I used to always love playing his music when I took piano.

That would have been a fun study to participate in.

Go Canada!

yeah, i mean, i put the tiesto thing in the title but obviously this study is just amazing and tells you that music is actually something that people can really enjoy and if it has effects on the dopamine system, you can honestly say that you are addicted to music. :) and that music is something that our brains are tuned to respond to.
