Where You Shouldnt Get A Tattoo? (pg. 8)

I don't want to sound superior here either, but first there all lame people that will walk into a tattoo shop and just pick a tattoo of a wall or an artists book, and it has absolutely no meaning what so ever, like a picture of a butterfly (not because they like butterfly's but just because they have no imagination and it looked cool at the moment). Then you have a small portion that get tattoos on a dare which is even dumber. Then you have the trend followers, that would be like the Tribal done in black down a mans arm or a star on a girls wrist or breast or upper shoulder. These people have no imagination what so ever.

But, there are people like myself that get tattoos that have meaning to them, I got this tattoo the day my uncle died and we were very close and I'm going to get this one touched up and also get a tattoo for my Grandma who died in November. To me and many cultures they are like a right of passage and that is how I see my tattoos and the ones I want to get. Also as one of the small percentage of the US population I suffer from 290.70 Life has been rough when you can't even control your own mind. So I want to have a sleeve down that will describe my adventure with mental illness and how I am ending up over coming it, so it is not a 100% negative tattoo.....once again a right of passage for me.

But you are right, they are great conversation starters and they do give you a lot of attention and people who really think about their tattoos or draw them themselves kinda love to talk about their tattoos when asked. But with people we all need attention. What's that old quote 'It's good to be seen and it's good to see'.

But there are other people who completely disagree with tattoos like yourself, they see them as a form of body mutilation...kinda like when people cut themselves when they feel bad, and my sister-in-law is always saying why get more tattoos...you are just giving yourselves a label of whom you are, that can completely change in a couple of years but see my tattoos have to do with dead family and mental illness, which even though I am getting a whole lot better it will always be a part of my past and I feel it needs to be documented on my body(once again the last picture on this sleeve will be positive as I overcame the mental illness. And when I have the extra cash, I am going to get the Desiderata poem tattooed on my back as I feel that poem shows some really great ways to strive to live your life by, plus I have been fascinated with that poem since I was 13.

Anyhow that's my story and some of my beliefs on tattoos.

This post is a load of really. I don't mind your tatt but I honestly don't dig colored tatts much. Why can't some people get it in their thick ing heads that it's just a matter of preference?

Sorry, I wasn't putting words into your mouth btw even if it seemed so. I simply disagree with that huge post you made about people generally getting tatts having no imagination, that they should have some kind of deep meaning behind them etc. Why can't someone simply like the idea of having a particular design placed on their body?

Well if you like the design then it does have a personal meaning. I'm talking about people who follow the crowd or don't know what thy want so they let the tattoo artist pick for them or they go through there portfolio and just pick a rose that is probably on tons of that tattoo artist clients. :)

I suppose you're right and these kind of people really are doing it for the wrong reason.
My tatts bear no significant meaning even to myself apart from the fact that I like them and I'm happy with them. Most of mine were done by a friend where I didn't choose anything, simply let him go to town and trusted him to give me something I was happy with. But then you have to know the artist and their style. I realise most people wouldn't do it this way either, but that's just me.
I just get a bit riled up when people get all judgmental of others with tatts, especially this day and age.

There's a lot of reasons why I don't have a tattoo, all of the social. I'm not embarrassed in any way by the fact I don't actually belong to a pacific/african/american tribe that has it as a cultural practice and neither do I feel the need to distinguish my skin from anyone else's by making it different colours.
Some people do at a fundamental level because there is a need to either make themselves appear unique or 'belong' socially in a group, it may not necessarily be a mainstream one, but they fit in and fitting in is healthy to some extent as we are social animals as much as we all like to think we're little snowflakes.

Then there's 'that other lot' who do for all the wrong reasons and get really rubbish tats... they're just damn hilarious :p

My friend Jake tattooed his toes to say "JAKES TOES," one letter on each toe except the last pinky. It always makes me laugh when he's wearing flips.
