Is it just me, or does anyone else hope that this asteroid goes through that "gravitational keyhole" so that we get to actually experience the movie Armageddon?
Hopefully Bruce Willis will be available to save the world that day.
apophisasteroid.org for anyone who has been living under a rock for the past few years. |

i thought that it was going to pass close to earth in 2029 and if the asteroid passed in the keyhole at this time the next time it looped around it would hit earth. 2012 is about our ascension of the human race not the demise of the planet, lets try to keep up. |

It wouldn't be passing through the keyhole until 2029, which would set up a date of April 13, 2036 for its collision with earth (or until Bruce Willis s that asteroid's up). They've changed the odds a bit over the past couple years. NASA apparently puts the odds of it passing through the keyhole at about 1 in 250,000.
The torino impact scale is basically like the Richter Scale is for earthquakes more or less, except that it is predicting the probability of an impact with earth, rather than the measured effect of it. It goes from 0-10, and is color coded with White being 0, Green being 1, Yellow being 2-4, Orange being 5-7, and Red being 8-10. The scale also takes into consideration the size of the object, the extent of damage it could theoretically do if it did hit earth, and also the priority of which their orbits should be monitored.
Apophis at one point was at Yellow level 4 for a short time, which broke the record for the highest level reached by any previously recorded near-earth asteroid. Its current level is a good ol' White level 1, so probably no need to worry, but Ben Affleck might want to clear his schedule for April 13, 2036 just in case. |

Not sure where you got any reference whatsoever to the 2012 theories from my post, but okay. I was referring to the American movie Armageddon.

That was just to present a very basic overview of what Apophis is and the various thoughts about the possibility of it hitting earth. I thought the (according to internet lore) part would give it away that it had nothing to do with 2012 at all.
Edit: Looking back on it, I'm wondering if you possess the ability to read.
"It surfaced in the news again in 2011 when it was thought that it would either hit the earth in 2012 (according to internet lore) or 2036 (according to Russian scientists)." |
