Change foreign ownership regulations for the telecom sector

Background (Preamble):
In 2009 Canada's Globalive, with the financial backing of Orascom attempted to launch Wind Mobile in major Canadian centers. At the time, the CRTC ruled that Orascom in effect ran Globalive due to the size of their investment in the venture, effectively preventing them from operating.
However, the Governor in Council (acting on suggestion of Tony Clement, Industry Minister of Canada) concluded that since Canadians owned 66% of the voting shares, that they were controlled by Canadians, and allowed them to launch Wind Mobile.
In little more than one year, Wind Mobile has launched in 5 major cities across the country, has signed up over 250,000 subscribers, invested hundreds of millions in our economy during an economic downturn, and has provided competition and more choices for wireless customers.
On February 4, 2011, the Federal Court ruled in a suit brought by competitors Public Mobile and Telus, that the Governor in Council's decision overriding the CRTC's decision was improper. Wind was granted a 45-day stay of the decision to file arguments.
There are thousands of jobs that are at risk, as well as the unlimited plans with no surprise fees that Wind Mobile has provided since their launch.
Petition:
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Canada to change foreign ownership rules to allow Wind Mobile to continue operating as currently structured, and to allow for more foreign investment in the Canadian telecom sector.

Just like the UBB petition, there is one for this latest CRTC related decision by the the courts.
Whether you are a Wind customer or not you stand to lose if Wind goes down. A market without real competition will allow the big 3 to continue gouging customers.
Think about it real hard
Thank you everyone |

| Time for some new overlords to rape us. |

| Wouldn't changing foreign ownership rules also allow a foreign company to effectively purchase and take over a company like Bell Canada? |

You would actually have a foreign company/country own our telecommunications infrastructure (regardless if you think the rates are unfair)? Don't you believe that there should be some things that can NEVER be foreign owned? That would be like selling your heart and arteries off to the highest bidder. |

| The government should just buy Bell Canada and Telus. How much worse would that be? |

Like that will EVER happen. Why do you think change will occur with these guys when they're quite happy keeping the industry down? Foreign competition is better than NO competition.
Also:
Ottawa appeals courts
and I'm not saying sell it all off to the highest bidder either...have it be well balanced. Some Canadian and some foreign. |
