I didn't realize the cotton club was a 700 people room. I remember seeing a band at the Tabby and they did a signing down there and it seemed pretty small. But yeah, I see your point, no reason to waste the space. I guess it's smart to cater to a different audience too. I guess I shouldn't hate on the dubstep thing. I guess I was just hoping for some anjuna guys and was disappointed.

Well, I for one have heard maybe 1 or 2 opening djs I've actually liked, so I am hard to please. That goes for the local guys too. Never did see what the fuss was with Ian James.

Well, I will wait and see who A&B bring then. I guess there is still hope. And to Devin, as mentioned, having Dubstep at the show is just going to bring a bunch of creeps who listen to that stuff. Isn't there already enough of those. Not meant as a jab to the guys on here that do listen to it, but it's just a different scene.

I will step in and say a couple things. I have been traveling 14 hours from Boston to Chicago and now in the middle of Iowa so i hope this comes out right. Its not against you but just moreso to give my thoughts and opinion.

-Most headliners require opening DJ's to play a certain way to include below a certain RPM. They basically want you to be bored to death so badly that when the headliner comes on you would be happy if they played Sandstorm followed by Castles in the sky. I have seen it taken to extremes before like the infamous Sasha and Digweed boat cruise. Year after year Tommie Sunshine played like a wedding DJ, not mixed and not even electronic music. By the time Sasha and Digweed got on with the minimal everyone screamed in complete Joy

-Kevin Focus is extremely skilled and probably the most versatile DJ I know of. I would compare him to Ian James and then some. I say this knowing you did not speak really highly of him. You really have to look between the cracks and take a deep look at an opening DJ. With all the headliners coming to the Forum (now Phoenix) and Kevin opening most every time, I have heard so many different styles of opening sets from him. My favorite goes to his recent opening for Robbie Rivera at RE:Public back in January. I think you guys are in for a treat.

-As far as the different music, i love the fact that there will be different rooms with different sounds. Takes me back to the days of the good parties when everyone was friends.

-Thank god we are venturing away from Opera. Ever since I saw that crap go down to my friend Hagen I vowed not to ever go back, even for PVD which I skipped out on because of this. More QUAD and Tabby shows please. SHM at the NATC would be excellent as well :)

agreed..

Eh, that's a bit of an overstatement...not saying some opening DJs don't do that, and not saying some headliners don't want their opening DJs doing that.

But opening DJs for the most part aren't supposed to be boring let alone torturing the crowd. They're supposed to playing slower music (note, not boring), so the patrons aren't exerting energy, and so that the patrons are talking and drinking and literally getting warmed up.

Depends on the headliner but if the headliner could outright say it, they would probably say "play bad so no matter what I play I look good". Because let's face it, most of the crowd doesn't listed to EDM every day or know track names etc so that technic works.

Honestly, it sounds like you are bored with most opening DJ's sets because it is house or minimal progressive. It sounds like you want progressive trance for a warm up set which just does not happen for most headliners now a days. Trust me, Kevin focus has the ability to blow your mind with trance, it just isn't the way you are allowed to open up for most headliners.

I really hope that "you" in your last post wasn't directed at me.

It was, it's nothing you should take personally though. It is my opinion of what I think you are looking for in an opening set. Instead of getting defensive or upset, how about enlighten me on how I was incorrect.

You obviously know nothing about me, and haven't been reading this thread closely. Since I specifically said I've liked Kevin Focus' opening sets.

I LOVE techno, minimal and house. I have a tech-house DJ friend and a minimal DJ friend who both get a lot of their latest songs they play live from songs I send them.

I don't take it personally that you don't read any of my posts or know anything about me. But I do take it personally when you make assumptions and spread mis-information about me. I'd prefer you actually read my posts and not make assumptions.

My apologies, I had you mixed up with PVDfan07 on the liking of Focus. Like I said I am traveling, tired so mistakes can be made. Not to mention I am reply on my phone so it's not as easy for me to look back

Sorry

to further clarify, the comments were not directed at PVDfan07 either since the statement was only valid if I combined the both people actually being one person.

K. Glad that's settled.

And I did get over-defensive...sorry. It's just I'm kind of tired of getting into arguments over what genre(s) I like. Seems to happen everytime I post in the Ultra/WMC threads. I should probably change my screen name, maybe that would cut down on some of the assumptions that I only listen to trance.
