Tracks with complex production

Sat here wondering about tracks which are hard to produce and taken as I don't have any extensive knowledge when it comes to producing music, I thought about what's the criteria for a track being difficult to produce.

Always considered Sasha's "Magnetic North" to be pretty complex.

I find many of the Orb's older stuff to be extremely intricate in terms of layering and song structure.

cheesy commercial electro house tunes usually have a lot more going on production wise than your < insert current trend underground tune > of the month.
Scoops
Sasha - Xpander
James Holden - A Break in the Clouds
James Holden - The Wheel

I like most of the stuff from BT's This Binary Universe.. i love listening to that stuff and studying it. I like how in his track 1.618 he switches time signatures and stuff... See You On The Other Side even has overlaying melodies playing in different times signatures at the same time. Most of that album was produced in C-Sound btw. 1.618 was produced ENTIRELY in C-Sound as well!

I'm not a producer either, but what sounds complex doesn't need to be complex. The sound in the beginning could be a standard synthesizer instrument, but is a pretty cool one though. I heard some sounds in series like 24 and some movies recently where they used standard Korg sounds.
I think the equipment and time a track was made also have to be taken into account. Made in the early 90's would be much more complex then these days from a technical point of view.

But would a track be more complex if more tracks were used to make it?

Well, in this example 98 are used. Whether that would make it complex I leave to the more experienced people over here. I don't expect people will find it complex just by listening. On the other hand I know my friend can hear sounds in e.g. Dash Berlin tracks where he doesn't know how they make it. Complex? Well, I can't even hear what's so special, which probably is why some producers don't get the recognition they maybe deserve:

Funny, because I always find Magnetic North to be a very simple track, especially for Sasha. But it depends what you mean by "complex production". Being difficult doesn't always mean being complicated. It can be very difficult to make a very simple but effective track - in fact a lot of producers will throw the kitchen sink into a record to try and mask its basic deficiencies.

I would think BT's TBU would be really complex to produce as mentioned above, knowing nothing about the subject though..

Orbital - Semi-detached. Quite some WERD timesig changes in the intro. Other than that, i think ive never heard anything complex within edm.

I'd say a lot of early 90's trance and techno, really dynamic structures and you really had to know your records because they weren't too DJ friendly. Plus artists then were artists and had the music theory and songwriting skills.
