One thing I've noticed with many trance/techno producers (not referring to anyone on this thread) is that they sometimes seem to have a hard time differentiating between chord changes, passages that employ secondary dominants or "borrowed" chords, and actual key changes. I think that part of it may just be a misunderstanding of the terminology (i.e., key change vs. chord change), but I also wonder if some of it is attributed to the ubiquity of one-chord tracks in these genres. In other words, so many tracks now days seem to feature so little harmonic variation that it could sound foreign and, therefore, misinterpreted as a key change, when a new chord(s) is introduced. Just a thought. :conf: |
Thanks all, I def meant going from one key to another so your first post was what I was looking for. Thanks everyone for contributing going to read it all later =] |

would it be wrong to say I dont like key changes in music

I might be with you there... I think it's from listening to over a decade of records that handle things mostly in one key, really really tastefully. I'm pretty sure you can get the sound you want by tricky borrowing, and we can leave modulating to JPOP and HHC.
Edit: I just wanted to say, if you listen to Prydz's Essential Mix from last year, He modulates his entire set at critical points. Modulating in a track has never interested me once. Mixing a track in as a modulation harmonically, after your last 8 tracks were very centered, now that is where it's proper as . |

I think most pop music traditionally has key changes (or mode changes, I don't know the proper theory terms) between the verse and chorus. I hear it some in EDM now too. I try to use key changes now because it makes the music less repetitive and where I lack in production skill I try to make up in songwriting. I am not trying to advertise (the song isn't very good) but I use a key change between main breakdown and climax in this tune:

Question, if you change the bass note, do you have to change the climax lead also? say if your sub bass is in G#, and you move that up, do you move the your climax lead in the exact steps (half step or whole step) as you did in the bass?
this solves some but not all. |

This is some cool and cleaver work man - finis it (some tweaks may need to be required) and we can push it to the Dance Station I know.

listen how brilliant Vimama we came is.
The main melody at first in solo sound like C major.
But when the base comes in its suddenly A minor without changing anything on the lead.
Then for the chord progressions the baseline it goes from A minor to F major C major G major and some random F twist. all while the main melody is exactly the same..
Magic right there
