There is absolutely no scientific evidence that the mayans could have used to predict the end of the world in 2012.
Also, since you're making the positive assertion "The mayans were right about 2012 based on 'scientific' methods." the burden of proof falls on you to prove that you're correct, not on us to prove that you're wrong.
All existing evidence from the past tells us that the world will keep spinning, and life will go on after 2012, because it already has for millions, or even billions of years already.
Could we find a correlation between these recent events and global phenomena like global warming, or the effects of solar flares? I think science has told us that we can, but I'm not well-versed in the science behind those theories at all. I've only read the occasional newspaper article that briefly discusses the theories along that path.

Every generation has moments where they believe the world will end during their lifetimes. It's because we place a much bigger importance on our own experience than we do the experiences of others, therefore our lifetimes always feel more important than the ones that came before. But the world only ends once, and I sincerely doubt it will happen in 2012.
almost exactly my sentiments on the topic, it probably won't happen but it would be cool if something did occur.

the mayans had 2 calendars, a more typical one, and a really long one, which happens to end in 2012. just like ours, theirs just mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. i think the moral of the story is,
don't live near fault lines.

There is nothing in the mayan 'prophecy' to suggest some kind of cataclysmic end of the world event. The end time of the calender itself represents the ending of just one cycle of time and the beginning of another. The mayan civilization (supposedly) knew about the precession of the Equinox (26,000 year gradual 'wobble' of the earth on it's axis). It is believed that the ending of the b'ak'tun coincides with this precession. The prophecy itself from what I remember is actually just a few lines of some vaguely ominous sounding metaphor, you can interpret it as anything

How the hell did these ancient, supposedly primitive civilizations know so much about astronomy and even create the most accurate calendar in existence?.. thousands of years ago without any of the technology we have today? Something is very fishy about all that I mean... the Egyptians knew that Sirius (the dog star) is a binary star system, even though the smaller of the two is not visible to the naked eye. As far as anyone knows there were no telescopes in ancient Mesopotamia sooo...
Another fun thing is that this Dec 21st 2012 date is coming from more than one place... Terence Mckenna discovered the exact same date while trying to make sense out of the infamously mysterious I Ching. Trying to paraphrase his findings is sorta impossible so just go download some torrents when you can, the dude is ing far out go listen to him seriously
Anyway, if there is something going on i think it's more of a paradigm shift and not an actual shift of the planet on it's axis. If something like that were to actually happen (pole shift) the destruction would be unimaginable. It's not even something you can hope to prepare for. But I do think that humanity is kind of coming to terms with itself and we're not going to be able to carry on like this for much longer... there is hard scientific data for that. Our entire infrastructure runs on oil which there is a very finite amount of. Global climate change, over population, all the while our technology is advancing exponentially. Could you imagine another thousand years of human evolution? no, there is no future at least not for the world as we know it today.
Basically, planetary change is natural and is happening all the time. There have been many, many extinctions on this planet and there will be many more. In fact we are between ice ages right now, during a very rare warm spell. doesn't last, at least built up around this illusory nonrenewable resource. Now would be a good time I think to find a self-sustaining community off the grid, hopefully close by to a natural spring. If the geological breakdown doesn't get you, the economic one will. It wouldn't hurt to be prepared, not because of all this retarded 2012 prophecy bull but because of the VERY REAL changes that are upon us. No one should expect a completely normal next 20 years.
