I thought this was a British thing. I remember an article by an American writer that claimed American girls are hotter than British girls because they take care of themselves. Seems like that was a bit of patriotic self-delusion on his part.
Maybe because I come from a pretty deprived area, but it kicked in especially fast with my former schoolmates. I left home at 18 and within a couple of years when I went back to visit, almost everyone had got fat, pregnant and prospectless. I can't imagine how depressing it must be at 20 years old knowing the peak of your attractiveness has already passed and you have nothing left to dream. It seriously ruins going back home for me. |

As with most things in US, it depends on where you are. I grew up in ATL, and there are more of the "got fat, gave up" types there than out here in Cali. In fact, most (not all, but most) of the Atlanta people who are still happy and youthful ended up either moving into the city or to a different city altogether.
I think the type of personality who never has a desire to leave the suburb in which they've spent their entire life is the type to fall into this trap. |
