GPU problems - Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT
I don't play games and this GPU is more then enough power for the daily user.
This GPU has three fan speeds, this is the best way I can describe it.
1) normal idling speed
2) high speed (very loud)
3) ultra high speed (ultra loud)
When I used XP, it would bounce from speeds 1 and 2; of course when its detects it needs more processing from the GPU, the fan kicks into speed 2. None this situation is regarding gaming.
Currently I'm running Windows 7; the first little while the fan performance was like XP. Here comes the pain in the ass part, after each major update like SP1... The fan is now pushing at speed 2 even more, it's very loud and annoying.
I've updated the GPU drivers through Windows update and tried the drivers from Nvidia, it made the situation even worst. Now the fan is at kept spinning at speed 2 all the time and it's driving me nuts. It doesn't need the extra cooling.
I've tried everything and can't figure it out, I've even played around with the power settings in control panel too.
Anyone else have these issues with their Nvidia cards? My other computer has a_Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT, I've never seen that card kick into speed 2 for non gaming usage. |

| maybe the fan itself is just dying. have you confirmed that its actually spinning faster as opposed to just making more noise spinning at the same speed? |

| Stupid question - have you blown the dust out of it? |

Okay well the 7600 is a fairly old card. Windows 7 Aero (the main theme), while more efficient than Vista's, is pretty graphics-intensive for weaker cards and has a lot of "pretty" elements that have to draw and render for just about everything you do on your PC. Do I think that alone would cause your fans to go nuts? Probably not, but over consistent use it would heat up your card no problem.
Try switching your display theme to Basic?
EDIT1: I don't think this is it, but avoid Windows Update drivers whenever possible - many of them are compatible generics that don't have all the same functionality as the one's straight from the manufacturer. I know you tried nVidia's, but just for future reference (I could be preaching to the choir here - I don't know your technical experience level, don't mean to offend you)
EDIT2: If you don't really care about possibly burning out the card and just want it to shut up, you can use something like Rivatuner to manually set the fan speeds. Do this with caution because if the card gets too hot it will start artefacting and/or die. |

Yeah I tried switching to basic mode too. :(
I read about RivaTuner also, didn't get a chance to try it out last night.
Thanks for all the tips, really appreciate all the help. |

Download SpeedFan from here: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php and see if your GPU temperature settings (provided they have a sensor) are anything high. Monitor the temperature as you do certain things on your computer and how the fan speed co-relates. It could be a busted fan or it could be the card is simply ting the bed.
At the end of the day, it might just be time for a new one - unless the fan is a fairly generic detachable I wouldn't go out of my way to just replace the fan on a card that old.
EDIT: After doing some more reading it might even be a driver issue with Windows 7. Try an older Vista driver with it and see if it works. Their support for older cards is only alright on the newer OS's, and the driver might be having a hard time controlling your fan speeds based on temperature. Good luck on getting a response from nVidia on that though. |

Ok I'll give that a shot too tonight, thank you sir.
That's what a lot of ppl are talking about, the driver issues :(

I'm gonna try to solve this by the weekend, if not ... gonna grab a used 8500 GT. |

No problem :)
I used to have literally this exact same card. Those fans/heatsinks are replaceable (as you can see by the little connector), but I'm not sure it'd be worth it. If you think it's the fan and can't replace the card, if you live anywhere near Oshawa/Whitby, you can PM me and I'll give you directions to my store - I probably have one kicking around that I could sell you for cheap. |

I agree with the others, hopefully it's driver issues.
