I have thought about this too. Each decade has its own specific kind of sound, except for 2010. A lot of the music produced in the last decade has been pretty superficial and forgettable. Food for thought: contrast this with the film industry from 2000-2010. Anyone else see a trend? |
The thing is people were saying the same thing in the 90's. Things do not become classics until nostalgia hits. Give it 5 years and you will be seeing a lot of that music you deemed as forgettable come back, and you will find out what the people who ditched the pills for family life will remember as classics. Nostalgia is really a mother...
I loved 80's movies because that is what we watched in the 80's. If you look back most of it is cheesy . Same with the 90's. Same with the 00's. Every generation likes to think that this is a new thing, but it isn't...it is just called you getting older and liking what you like. It happens to all of us eventually, like it happened to your parents it will happen to you. |

I think that pretty much sums it up. Early 90s they ripped 80s music, early 2000s they ripped 90s, now they're ripping 2000-2010. Give it 8-10 years and you'll see all the grown up pop, emo, dirty south etc. fans talk about how awesome their music was.
Other than that it's all subjective to personal tastes. But on macro level you need some time before something old/dead turns into something valuable/classic. |

the drugs aren't good enough now. bring back the good drugs and you might see people make music like that again ;) |
Seriously? The drugs that existed "back then" - surprise - still exist!

the trend is cookie cutter because you cant take as many risks when most people are going to steal your product anyways.
Want to get quality back? Start buying what you like. If not its only going to get worse the more that people steal. |
So your theory is that essentially, all artistic advancement has been done for the purpose of profit? LOL. |

I have been around in "the past", yes. So how are "the drugs" today any different?
LSD is still LSD
MDMA is still MDMA
Mushrooms are still Mushrooms
Weed is still Weed
Ketamine is still Ketamine
And well...you get the idea. Same chemical properties, same effects, same ability to influence music.
Now, if you overdid it and burnt out in your younger days, I can see why you'd think they're not as "good as they used to be" - or hell, even if you were responsible with them they'll still lack the magic that you remember from when you first tried 'em (nostalgia). And for those who are first trying them today, they'll probably be saying the same thing you're saying 20 years from now (won't make it any truer though). The point is, they're all still the same. |

Yes the actual drugs are the same but the fillers are not and the amount of filler has increased. I would love for someone to actually do a test on what is in the Ketamine or MDMA or Coke they get. I bet most people would be shock at the percentage of the actual drug. I would hazard a guess that less than 40% is the actual drug you think you are buying. |

i just watched a documentary on cocaine the other night and it showed that people buying coke today as an average regular buyer are being sold coke with approximately 15-20% purity. exactly why ive said for so long its a waste of money unless youre somehow high up the food chain. |

Low-quality cocaine would make sense I suppose, considering what I've heard about the whole Lavamisole thing going on these days. But then I don't think that its ever been much of an influence on (good) music anyway, certainly not to the extent of psychedelic drugs in any case. I mean, when I think of coke I think of ty disco and even tier early-80s dance music.
As for MDMA, I'd dispute that. Things seem better now than they were even just a few years ago, where an "E" essentially meant that you were getting Meth. In that time period Canada has become, I believe, the world's largest producer of MDMA (actual MDMA), which means a whole lot of it and at low prices.
And as far as LSD and Mushrooms and Weed and all that go (which have probably been the biggest influence on modern music), "filler" isn't an issue at all, nor is availability. |
