Studio Monitors

Just getting into production. Need a solid pair of studio monitors. Looking for recommendations & tips when shopping for them. What should I be keeping an eye out for?
Probably check out L & M, Steve's Music and Moog Audio. Don't really want to spend more than $600 on a pair, and knowing me, I'll get talked into spend more lol :p

I would say Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2 but they are hard to come by.

Actually... I found a pair of 8.1s on Ebay instead of being $400 for the pair they are $350.

not sure if this is 'studio quality' speakers but check out

feelgood
Im pretty new to the audiophile world, but Ive been using Behringer Truth 2031a's for the last year and have been impressed. Im sure they don't compare to the high end stuff, but these have been more than adequate for tinkering around with song edits and fooling around with production. They go for 4-500 per set.

Kris, get KRK's for sure. They're the best bang for the buck! If you can then maybe finding a pair of Yamaha NS-10s those were THE nearfield monitors back in the day.

If you can then you should listen to a bunch of different monitors to see which ones you like. Get a WAV file of a song you know VERY well (preferably not EDM) and listen to the song on the different monitors to see how they sound.

Right now Genelecs are the hot new monitors. Try checking those out too.

take cd with 4-5 tunes that are different style wise (make sure to use good quality copies ie. no mp3s) listen to them few times and home on your current speakers/headphones then head down to long & mcquade and bring that cd there and listen to speakers in your price range repeatedly

Room dimensions also should be considered. If you have tiny room sound refelections will make a monitoring nightmare with bigger speakers therefore in situation like this its better to get smaller set and add a sub with a footwitch so you could check your low end when needed only.

as far as brands go you could settle for something like krk rokits but honestly rokit series sucks donkey balls unless you have rokit sub with it(i've had rokits 8s with a rp10 sub for 4 years before upgrading). On their own they are too boomy and midrange is weak, not to say that you can't get used to them.

As far as general listening impressions from monitors: DO NOT LOOK FOR A NICE SOUND and don't expect a huge accurate low end in that price range. Most nice monitors don't have a pleasing sound to them and actually cause ear fatigue after prolonged listening (ie Yamaha NS-10s or Mackie Hr824 mk1).

Yamaha Hs-80s are a very popular and quite decent pair of monitors

also i wouldn't shy away from a decent used pair, check L&M for used stuff they do have some but you gotta ask for some models (+ they do extendended warranty on most used products for a fee which is very useful). There are always deals on craiglist and kijiji but one thing i would stay away from buying are used KRK rokits and i've heard few stories about circuitry failing particularly on rokit 5s and i actually had RCA ins and outs failed on my krk rp10 sub and i never even used those.

Definitely check Yamaha HS80, KRK VXT 6, M-Audio DSM series (not a fan but they do sound ok compared to other M-audio stuff), Fostex PM-2 MKII (i think they have those at Moog Audio).

From used : KRK V6 or V8(very nice monitor), Mackie HR824 MK1 , Adam A7

mnemonic.
Damn, I just sold my KRK Rokit 6's for $250 (for the pair) ... I'd def recommend the KRK's.

I'm picking up my VXT 8's from MOOG today :D Noise complaints here I come! They were $615 a piece, tax in, but they render sound so incredibly accurately.

lol @ Genelec! Those things are mad expensive!! Their lowest end model is a 3" with low end response of 74Hz. Don't get me wrong, surely they're incredibly accurate, but the best value for your money is going to be a KRK.

mackie hr824

that is all.
