My advice is to find an older pair of JBL passive monitors like the JBL 4412's and then get a good amp to power them.

Powered studio monitors ing blow.

not really..

can't go wrong with VXT 8 but they are quite pricey as you can see how much mikey is paying, there are cheaper options with a reasonably good sound.

It really all comes down to room acoustics though, it's hard to adjust at first but eventually you will be able to tell exactly how it should sound right on any monitors. I would recommend staying away from M-audio as they are not the greatest.

best thing to do is walk into a store like L&M and ask them to test each monitor, you will hear which one you like best.

Totally agree Gera, there are much more affordable monitors that deliver great value for the money! There was nothing wrong my KRK Rokit 6 monitors, I just wanted VXT8's because Ryan is producing on them too.

The only thing I would add to your point on room acoustics is how important it is to learn your monitors and familiarize yourself with them.

If you want cheap but good, M-Audio BX5A's are $250 for the active pair at Long & McQuade and sound AMAZING for 7 inchers.

Hence why I said cheapies. They are extremely good for the price. Wasn't saying they were the greatest monitors ever made lol...

I'm on VXT6's and they work well for the medium sized room I'm in.

I would recommend going to http://www.savedbytechnology.com/ instead of the other stores mentioned with an Ipod of your favourite tracks and listening to some studio monitors and asking the guys there for help.

Great store, and the people there actually know what they are talking about.

Make sure you also check the connections.

Never have an unbalanced output go into a balanced input of speakers.

Have a balanced output with a balanced cable (TRS or XLR) going into a balanced input of speakers only.

You can also get speakers with RCA cables, but they tend to be unbalanced and you can pick up hum, hiss, or radio frequencies with them especially if the cable is longer and unshielded.

If you don't have an audio interface that has a balanced output, I would recommend the Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1. Solid interface that comes with some freebie software too.

I've worked on KRK Rokit 6's (SE's) which then went to Michael, and now work on the VXT8's.

However, as I've got a 4 year old boy to take care of, I spend the majority of time mixing on Sennheiser 555's and Audio Technica ATH M50's...

To be honest, I love my VXT's. They definitely aren't ideal for low volume mixing, However, I love how they render the bottom end for me... it's really improved my ability to tidy things up down there.

That being said, I also love having a duo of good headphones and good monitors. I've come to rely on the team together. Many will say that you can't get a good mix on headphones, but I've come to find that - like anything - if you really, truly learn the soundfield and learn how to fill the spaces just right, you can get pretty darned close... especially for 120 bucks ;)

KRKs are great for studio monitors

M-Audio studio monitors are cheaper and nearly as good.

If you need a good price, I'm doing some work for a music equipment store and can prolly hook you up with a good deal.

there's a lot more to the M-Audio range that actually impresses.

words are useless without examples? not to flame but i think if you make a statement like this than you probably should back it up with some examples at least

i think only DSM M-audio series come somewhere near a decent monitor category, rest is garbage and should not be used as such

that said i haven't heard the m-audio ex66s which might actually have something to them

damn yo m-audio, never hear those being recommended at all, lol. surprised only one person mentioned the yamaha series, quite known for being very flat and good for translation. saving for a pair of Dynaudio gonna be a bit :(

btw, what are the dimensions and qualities of your room if you dont mind me asking?
