Can somebody help explain the concept of a mix?

Yes I know most of you will flame me for this, but in all my years of listening to EDM I have yet to listen to a mix/liveset that doesn't sound like a collection of random tracks thrown together. This includes trance, house, tech-house, compilation albums, podcasts, internet shows, etc.

The only noticeable element to me between transitions is tempo and the obvious intro and outros to a set, but is there supposed to be anything more? EDM tracks as a whole sound so different than each other that I'm having a difficult time believing that they're lined up in a set for a specific reason outside of tempo. Yet I keep hearing stories that some of these sets create intentional soundscapes...

Like right now I'm listening to ISOS 2 and it sounds, to me, just like a bunch of tracks thrown together on a disc.

Yes I don't get it...can anyone give me their $2.49 on this issue and help me out?

try listening outside of the trance spectrum to guys that do more than play a track for 9 minutes and a simple bass switch after the break.

1+1= 3

figure it out.

Trance DJ's need time to do the Jesus pose in between tracks. That's probably why there's not that much actual mixing aside from beat matching.
Zyklon_Jay
beat matching? :haha:

doubt it.

I meant matching the beat with the frequency of fist pumps coming from the crowd.

try listening to Balance 005, Balance 008, or Global Underground: ATHENS...then you gain the concept of what a proper studio mix is all about

Really, the only thing you need to listen to, to dispel that notion.

Robert Hood's fabric is way better than that:p

You can read something about one of the best mixers and remixers ever, our mastermixer Ben Liebrand:

Also see the background information:

http://www.liebrand.nl/cd/gm_disco/index.html

An example, a mix which sounds as if its one track, I even have it on cd-maxi:

He made uncountable mixes and inspired most of the big Dutch DJ's. Ben 'discovered' Armin, although some won't be happy about that I guess.

Here another random mash-up of his to show how good he is and that it is much more then beat matching some tracks after each other:
