Most Canadians still think there's bears on a streets in Russia, playing balalaikas, don't you? And except for Gagarin, they didn't do anything else?
Race to the moon was just race to get there first, it does not serve any practical purpose. It is a lot cheaper and more effective to send robots, and nobody still does it, almost 50 years later. You know why? Because it's huge waste of money, there's nothing to do for a man.
Russians have sent tons of deep space probes, just because you don't know about them, doesn't mean they don't have them.
As for current USA space program, it is non-existent, as they don't have their own means of travel to ISS and have to rely on Russian 50 year old Souyz to get there.
Cost them 50 mil every time too.
And with current state of economy, who knows, if they ever get back in space.

I just read how NASA's funding is actually only 1.3% less than last year...

Personnel at NASA must be breathing easy after they found out the U.S. Government’s 2011 budget compromise included $18.485 billion for the space agency, just 1.3% less than the amount NASA received in 2010.

Pretty cool new Mars rover...

Tons of jobs and industries rely on that funding. It might seem frivolous but cutting it anything greater would just be worsening the recession effects.

And the US space program isn't non-existent. The heavy work has just been privatized...

Pretty sure they use the Space Shuttles to get there.

Ps. of course there's bears walking around on the streets. this is why your country is in such turmoil

I totally agree with you Gera but I fail to see how the Americans are still trying to catch up, when they've already put men on the moon, sent rovers to Mars, probes to Saturn and it's moons, not to mention the Voyager I and II probes.

They are definitively not catching up, what i meant is everyone else is catching up to US and will catch up eventually.
especially the joinT efforts like china-russia, russia-europe/france,
japan, india etc. I think it will be a race now who will successfully land and return from a man mission to mars.

You do realize that the Space Shuttle program is being retired after the last flight on June 28th right??

I mentioned that a few posts up. Space X is taking over, but from what I've been hearing from industry sources they've been asked to fast track their program since the other national programs can't carry a big enough payload to properly supply the ISS. If Space X can't deliver, then they'll have to temporarily abandon the ISS by the end of this year.

This is also irrelevant, but I think Yuri was very handsome. :gsmile:

And also modest, I heard.

Add to it the fact that he was also brave and, like me, he was interested in the starts and planets from an early age. That makes him a very admirable man, I think :toocool:

I'm going to read his biography.
