Beta: Waterloo, An In Depth Review (pg. 3)

We do appreciate everyones contribution and reviews :)

We do have a solid sound system (Dynacord Alpha powered by Crown I-tech.) Sound has progressively got better. We are working on a new speaker setup to better use our equipment.

In the DJMAG Club Poll, BETA # 15 is in Denver and is not us. BETA # 29 is our entry.

In respect to the crowd since AVICII (encore) we have been checking ID and ensuring everyone that enters is 18+.

Like always, we thank everyone for there time, support and constructive criticism.

Also to be clear the ownership at BETA is no way related to the ownership at Tabu / 140 West (location of fire)

If you are referring to Ryan H. Ryan H was out of Tabu in March.

“RYAN C” who is the owner of Cameo and was the sole owner of Tabu / 140 West at the time of the fire on April 22, he was joined in March by the groups that own various nightlife spots in Toronto.

To be fair to Cameo, up until very recently the ownership never had an bars or interest in any bars in London.

The liquor licene is a strange beast these days since the introduction of risk based licensing. Some people may have had experiences with the AGCO that are worse or maybe better. However for the most part this is what a new nightclub startup has to go through. Just very few actually open without liquor sales, they sit ideally and wait or go out of business while waiting. It really is unfortunate.

The place is 18+ (like clubs in most of the world, or 1 year younger than in Ontario)...everyone there is - presumably - an adult.

That crowd is EVERYWHERE, not just in Waterloo unfortunately!

I call them the Newskool Ravers.

The first time I experienced them in full force was at Electric Zoo in NYC last Sept. They've crossed over the river since then, and taken over EDM clubs across Canada!

Just look at vids from ULTRA in Miami as well. They were there too! You'll see a sea of neon clad ppl. I don't think they'll be going anywhere, anytime soon. I think they're here to stay :(

That whole "scene" started in Southern California with the rise of trashy popular electro house & dubstep in recent years (led by David Guetta, Deadmau5, Skrillex, etc). And like most subcultures that have gone through that part of the world (see: hip hop & punk in the 90s), they took something perfectly good and bastardized it, then re-spread it across North America.

But whatever, not really any worse than douchebag guido types or all the gangbanger types from a few years back and so on. ty people are ty people whatever trend of the moment they latch onto.

Ya, I agree. I def. associate that crowd with Dubstep and Electro more than anything else.

I just find it funny that that younger crowd is bringing glowsticks and such items back into the scene, when they had FINALLY, almost made their way completely out of it! :whip: UGH! lol

i love how people complain about "raves" being all ages. The original raves and warehouse parties were all ages. That was the point!! And people ran around in loud clothes and did stupid things. That was the point!!

The difference between now and then is that you didnt have internet forums for bitter s to write novels about how much they hated it. The bitter s just didnt go back and the party was better for it.

Are "Nu ravers" my style or how id act today? nope. But thats the point. I did a lot of stupid things in the early 90s that im sure got looked down on the same way but i didnt care. I had fun. And that was the only point of it all.

Thats a good point, but - what at least am complaining about - are not the actual raver kids of today (or all-ages events), but about the specific "nu raver" types, which in my opinion, represent a "cheapening" of the scene. Basically a bunch of otherwise uninterested people latching onto the latest trend, which just so happens to be crappy imitation of something I care about.

To me, they and their music are to EDM/raves what Green Day/Simple Plan/etc. are to punk.
