I recommend getting one of these...very handy and saved me from any RyanAir headaches for my Ibiza flight last year

thanks for the tip... less stress at the airport.

Doesn't the extra baggage money go to the Airline? Where as the departure tax is a tax that the airline must submit to the city?

Any case, the Hey's luggage scale is awesome. I got 2 of them free from work and don't travel without it!

lol you guys are talking about Mexico, the country where you get kidnapped and theres a 50% chance it's actually the cops that did it, right? I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was a widespread and well known scam...

I've been to Mexico numerous times and it's not a bad scary place to travel, you're just feeding into the bad publicity isn't got lately.

As for this so called "scam", as someone already mentioned it's the airline that checks the bags and has restrictions and not the airport. With that being said, I still don't feel like this was a scam. You go away and buy stuff and your bag gets heavier, it's always been like that so you just plan for it in advance. Damper clothes are definitely a factor too, you were just in a humid part of the world for a weak.

If you're really in doubt, carry one of those bag scales like Swamper suggested. They also come in handy when you pack in the first place too.

....or just never travel again....

My clothes were not damp as we never had the A/C on in our room when we were not in it and BARELY left it on while we were in the room. We were always swimming or in Playa during the day, and at night it was not that hot so we had no use for the A/C.

Also, the hotel we stayed at is only 2 years old and out of the 3 other resorts I've ever stayed at down south, this was the LEAST damp by far!! It's known that with older hotels, they are wetter...I also dried all my bathing suits and anything "remotely wet" every day out on the terrace, so my clothes being damp from the humidity was NOT the issue.

This thread was more to give travelers an insight to maybe to pack less before traveling or bring you own portable scale like mentioned above or just be cautious of how much you are bringing back in general.

I am 100% positive that Sunwing, the airline I was with, were the culprits in this case. If I was 1kg over, I would still unpack my belongings and make my suitcase lighter and then re-check, and I wouldn't have posted this thread and figured they were right. The fact that I was over 3kg (aka I had come back with 7kg 'extra' weight when the stuff I brought back weighed NO MORE than 3.5kg) with stuff that does not weigh that much is what got me upset. I'm not a newbie at traveling, and I've never had this problem before when bringing stuff back. In fact, I've brought even more stuff in the past and never went over.

Another good idea is maybe have them weigh your bag on the scale beside and see the difference!!!!!! :)

Wouldn't they take the wights on their (weighted) scales over what yours said, claiming that you had offset yours?

I dunno, just guessing here.

Pro tip: don't waste your time going to a hole like mexico

Had the same problem coming back from Punta Cana. Moisture was the culprit but I just took out an extra sweater/jacket and I was fine.

Probably this.

Also as for the wet clothing, why not dry it all out beforehand? I dunno.

Moisture will kill it and weight everything down. When I was in Punta Cana 2 years ago on the third day my passport was damp, the gum melted in my suitcase, my clothes felt a lot heavier, and coming back and weighting my bag added significant pounds.

I can see it being a scam though but moisture must be taken into account on the way back.

Listen you bunch of goofs... you just call the big boss looking one aside and slip em a twenny. Trust me, your whole parties luggage will be UNDERWEIGHT! Works every time. You're welcome :)

just being in a humid place is enough, you don't need to have the A/C on or anything like that. Hell, just wearing clothing everyday and sweating is enough to add a few kg to the weight.
