just being in a humid place is enough, you don't need to have the A/C on or anything like that. Hell, just wearing clothing everyday and sweating is enough to add a few kg to the weight. |
+1
The AC isn't what will do it and you probably won't noticed the humidity because you get acclimatized to it pretty quickly. |

| Humidity was not an issue while we were down in Playa as it is still dry season. Humidity was between 50-65% and no higher the entire week. |

I've been to Mexico numerous times and it's not a bad scary place to travel, you're just feeding into the bad publicity isn't got lately. |
The bad publicity is in concerns to drug trafficking gang wars, mostly along the border with hotspots like Juarez. That's basically organised gangs which the army is working against and would rather have out of Mexico.
The example I used was kidnapping which has been around for decades now. The center of this is De Efe/Mexico City and that's where it runs rampant. It's part of daily life and the cops are literally part of the kidnappings. Try even reporting a kidnapping in Mexico City, most the stations won't even let you file your claim because they don't want to be the ones responsible for it. I'm not trying to spread fear by any means but this is the reality of their country and I was using it to highlight how corrupt things are there. Their tourists towns barely have kidnappings as the government strives to protect it's tourist industries. But overcharging people on luggage isn't going to kill that sector anytime soon and it sounds like something they would do, so I'm not surprised.

Listen you bunch of goofs... you just call the big boss looking one aside and slip em a twenny. Trust me, your whole parties luggage will be UNDERWEIGHT! Works every time. You're welcome :) |
This is the only good advice I've seen in the thread other than the obvious. Don't try to fight the system when you're just visiting, keep it simple go nuts with your weight and pay a few pesos to not have the headache.
The luggage scale is a good one too but if it differs from theirs then you have an argument on your hands and are back at square one. |

As for this so called "scam", as someone already mentioned it's the airline that checks the bags and has restrictions and not the airport. With that being said, I still don't feel like this was a scam. You go away and buy stuff and your bag gets heavier, it's always been like that so you just plan for it in advance. Damper clothes are definitely a factor too, you were just in a humid part of the world for a weak.
If you're really in doubt, carry one of those bag scales like Swamper suggested. They also come in handy when you pack in the first place too.
....or just never travel again.... |
I love Mexico and I've never had a bad experience there (other than Montazuma's Revenge from oysters off a cart)...
Also, why does everybody still travel to the tropics with checked bags??
Carry on only FTW!!! |

Plus having the AC on will actually dehumidify the air... |

Dude, it's the beach...
You need to learn how to pack...
And not fudge. You're already an expert...

Yeah, I use carry on's whenever I can but a week or two away just won't fit in a bag. Especially now that the airlines are really restricting the carry on's as well. When I was in South America over the holidays my buddy only brought a carry on, and although he was able to do it he did struggle. He also paid a good amount for laundry services, which is still pretty cheap considering. |
