Haha you guys are funny. Just came across this article on yahoo's homepage about "adult selective eating" and "supertasters". Interesting....
•What is Adult Selective Eating? Like kids, adult picky eaters limit themselves to an extremely narrow range of foods. Unlike those who suffer from anorexia nervosa or bulimia, adult picky eaters are seemingly not worried about calorie counts or body image. But so far, researchers don’t know if adult picky eaters just haven’t outgrown childhood patterns or if their eating habits are a new twist on obsessive compulsive disorder. Some may be “supertasters,” with an abnormally acute sense of taste that turns them off certain foods. Many appear to have had unpleasant childhood associations with food.
•Adult picky eaters: Food preferences tend to be bland, white or pale colored - plain pasta or cheese pizza are said to be common foods along with French fries and chicken fingers. Some picky eaters stick to foods with a common texture or taste.

Just as an example, I love sushi. I can't get enough of it. But here's my criteria for choosing a sushi restaurant:
- owned and operated by Japanese. (sorry my Korean friends & other Asians)
- has a sushi bar so I can inspect freshness and quality of the fish
- doesn't offer sushi you can't fit in your mouth in one bite
- no buffet
- recommended by other sushi lovers |

WOW, where do I start with this?
I have a son, 15 yrs old. as a baby, he ate pretty much anything. as a toddler, he started pushing things away. after age 5, he became picky. now a bit of info on him...he had/has sensitive hearing(fireworks sounds were too much for him and he would cry it hurt his ears) so I think his taste buds are just as sensitive. for him, it is about texture first, taste second. we have been trying to change his ways telling him to try a couple bites of something. he'll try it and think about it and say he either didnt like it, will try again next time or he liked it(rarely happens). we have been telling him that if he takes a girl out, eating spaghetti or quesadillas isnt going to impress her and eating off the kids menu will make him look stupid.
now as for my hubby, he is less picky but is scared to try new things and if we go to a new place, he will find something that is the most basic of things...no werid veggies or weird sauce. he is a meat and potatoes kinda guy for the most part.
do you know how much it sucks having 2 people like that to cook for when I was brought up trying anything and everything?! I love food and I have to bring myself down to their level. when we go out, I go for plates with flavor and meats I dont cook(pork, lamb, veal, lengua, etc...). life is too short to eat bland food. there is such delicious food out there. being allergic to food is one thing but choosing not to eat it cuz youre too scared to try it is another. try things, you might like it...worst case, you dont but give food a chance! |

Like Food Trucks!!!! I don't get this new foodie fascination with Food Trucks! To me, no matter how you put it, they're still roach coaches with nasty food. To top it off, some of them are as expensive as restaurants.
I've yet to try one that will blow me away, and I've tried several. As a matter of fact, we had like 20 "gourmet" food trucks show up to my work last year, and it was all over Twitter. I tried several of them and they all sucked, except the Shaved Ice one! hahaha
Growing up, I worked at a factory. Every day, a different food truck would show up during lunch time. Back then, food trucks were something we ate when we couldn't afford to go to McDonalds or we didn't have time to. They were nasty!!!

Lindsay, it's fine to be picky if the person has very good taste and doesn't settle for mediocre crap. |

It's not that I am a picky eater, it's just that I have exquisite tastes.
I will not touch anything from the sea. Period. You see that lobster? That lobster looks like a cockaroach. They might be relatives. Not eating a cockaroach with claws. no sir.
I'm all about burgers. I'm also all about chick-fil-a. chick-fil-a is a high class fast food resturaunt. They don't treat you like they do in chick-fil-a. If you don't believe me, go there. |

I used to hate Indian food, but have come to love a good curry and a good garlic naan. But not just indian curry. Japanese curry is hella good. Don't like Thai curry though. |

I'm a pretty picky eater when I have the option to be, but at the end of the day, if my options are limited, I will eat whatever, except a few things (Sushi, Indian food, anything mayonnaise, anything with mushrooms, and a few other random items that I can't think of off the top of my head).
Until I was about 12 or 13, I was simply a picky eater...I would only eat what I wanted to eat, and if I didn't like the options before me, I would just not eat. My mom used to play the "if you don't eat your dinner, you can't eat dessert" card on me...I never cared for dessert for some reason, so this never worked on me. But when I started going out on dates...I didn't wanna look foolish, so I literally just ate whatever. That's how I found out I did not like Sushi. Ate it on a date, almost threw up after every bite. Pretty sure the girl knew too. Ya...no 2nd date. |
