what actually turned you into classic trance?

I know at one point we were all into commercialized Eurodance or some
some of you may have started probably at the 2003 era when tiesto was releasing that lame parade of the olympics (and still to this day I hate those songs)
but we all start somewhere when it was considered commercial, cheesy, or mainstream.
what was it that made you dig into the old stuff like Love Simulation (PVD), Madagascar, Kaleidoscope, We Came In Peace, Gamemaster, Summersault, Highlander, Suburban Train, type of Trance? (I know these are not the best old school tracks but please bear with me here)
for me, I started trance at the DJ MystiK era and slowllyyyyyyyyy (like 6 years of listening to trance) to finally appreciate old school trance
and did you guys ever experience those times when you FIRST listened to old school trance and thought it sounded like , but somehow months or years later you listened to it again and it was amazing to a point of a possible epiphany? |

Er... those were the kind of tracks I liked straight away. Even when I started listening around 2001/2, "trance classics" compilations were very common (strange, given many of the tracks on them were only a couple of years old) and I bought quite a few that had those tracks on them.
For me it took a couple of years to get into the more progressive side of things. I think is mainly because when I was 15 I had ty headphones and so the rumbling basslines and rich atmospherics of progressive were completely lost on me, and only the most blaringly obvious big melodies would stand out on my £3.99 Sony earbuds. |

I remember using WinMX/Napster to get any kind of free EDM tracks with the majority of it being the big/epic commercial stuff. You maybe had a 128 bitrate of tracks and live sets which really took out any lush qualites.So all that was left were those big melodies and strings with no low end warmth.
Didn't really help living in the US with radio stations playing DJ Encore, DJ Sammy, and other crap of that kind. For me really it was Oakenfold that really brought me into the 'classic' trance you're referring to. His CDs and comps were the only Trance taken seriously here due to his sales overseas and being a world renowned DJ/Producer, so US labels didn't feel like he was much of a gamble; so you mainly had to take what was given to you at the time.
It wasn't until I purchased a pair of Sony MDR-700(I know what you are thinking, not the best phones)TT's and vinyl that I really started to choose what tracks I wanted ,rather then just accepting anything.
Like System-J stated, Progressive's basslines were so massive it was ridiculous and the atomospheres created could not be reproduced with equipment. |

| in 2000 a tipical club set consisted in eurodance + trance so it was easy, i preferred the trance tracks, you start with Darude - Sandstorm Paffendorf - Where are you and from there you start diving into more serious stuff |

| I've already been looking at reviews for a new pair. I remember thinking that the 700s were the best thing ever when I first got them, and I'm sure I'll be blown away by the new pair I get when these ones go the way of the dodo. |

When I heard both albums in 1998 all my friends and I fell in love with trance. All I had heard up until that time were DJs like Doc Martin and Steve Loria here in Los Angeles. I feel in love with trance that year and still love it to this day. :) |
